SMOKER WAS SMOKING AT THE LAND OF LEGENDS

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Hamburg, NY's Ron Smoker picked up his first ever Canandaigua Speedway DIRT Modified feature victory last Saturday on Corvettes by Turner and Fairport Savings Bank night. John Plumb won the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature. In the full fender divisions it was Jon Miller grabbing his second Pro- Stock feature of the year, while Frank Burnell and Richard Briggs each earned their third win of the year in the dual Canandaigua Speedway's Street Stock features.

Darryl Ruggles jumped into the lead at the drop of the green in the DIRT Modified 35-lap feature. Ruggles was able to build only a slight lead over Dave Axton and Ron Smoker when the yellow flew on lap five, as rookie Aaron Blowers looped his number 97B in the first turn.

The restart saw Smoker blast past both Axton and Ruggles for the lead. Smoker then built a ten car advantage on Ruggles. The yellow flew for a second time on lap 15, when Billy Decker slowed on the speedway backstretch. During this yellow the second place runner, Darryl Ruggles, slipped into the pit area leaving second to Bob McCreadie.

The restart saw Smoker build up his seven car lead again. But on the move was Tim McCreadie. The younger McCreadie battled Tim Fuller for fourth as Vic Coffey raced in third. On lap 18, Tim passed both Fuller and Coffey to take third. He then took off after his father in second. Tim made the daring outside move around his father on lap 22 through the third and fourth turns. McCreadie then tried to narrow the gap between himself and Smoker. McCreadie was consistently turning in fast laps running high around the speedway. On lap 32, he was on the rear bumper of Smoker, challenging for the lead. With the crowd on their feet Smoker held off McCreadie by a mere .509 seconds for the $2,000 feature win. Tim McCreadie finished in second followed by Steve Paine, Coffey and Gary Tomkins. Due to the cautions the average speed for the race was just 60.882 mph.

The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature got off to a rough start when Steve Gray pounded the first turn wall on the first lap. John Plumb was recorded as the leader, with Ricky VanNeil in second and Adam VanPatten in third.

Plumb drew away for the pack on the restart by some ten cars lengths. VanNeil found himself in a side-by-side battle for second with Joe Beyea, VanNeil and Paul Guererri. However the yellow flew on lap six when David Allen slowed in the third turn. Another yellow, lap 8, flew when Jason Whipple stalled exiting pit road, coming to a stop in the fourth turn.

Plumb continued to lead with Beyea firmly in second by lap 11. VanNeil moved up to challenge Beyea one last time on lap 15. But it would be Beyea coming out on top.

The final yellow came on lap 17 when Scott Joy looped his number 12J in the third. This set up a dash to the checkers. Plumb held off his rivals, recording a victory by 1.271 seconds over Beyea in second. Karl Comfort came up through the field to finish third. Rounding out the top five were Justin Haers and Guererri.

The caution filled Pro-stock feature saw Scott Fremouw take the lead at the drop of the green. Fremouw's luck changed for the worst on lap 14, under yellow, when he had a tire went flat, leaving Jon Miller in the lead followed by Chad Homan, Jipp Ortiz and Patrick Hobbs. Ortiz was about to fall back as he drifted high through turns three and four. Ortiz then gathered his car together and moved back into fourth.

At the finish line it would be Miller, followed by Homan, Patrick Hobbs, Ortiz and Lee Burnett. A total of five yellow flags slowed the race.

Two 10-lap Street Stock features were run as 35 cars were on hand for the races. The first feature saw Frank Burnell take command of the race on lap two when leader James Henry pulled his number 21 Camaro into the pits.

The second feature saw Leroy Lewis pass Tim Burnell for the lead on lap five. As Lewis charged into the final lap his car flipped over in the first turn, losing a wheel. This put second place runner Richard Briggs in line for a well deserved victory as the checkers and caution were displayed together.
