HEBING AND SHOVE CLAIM FIRST WINS OF THE SEASON

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Chuck "the Cobra" Hebing, from Ontario, NY, lived up to his nickname and "struck" when it was least expected. Hebing led the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature at Canandaigua Speedway from green-to-checkers last Saturday to claim his fourth Canandaigua career victory. He last won at Canandaigua on May 29, 1999. Karl Comfort continued his quest for his third straight Canandaigua Sportsman championship by claiming the caution filled 20-lap Sportsman feature. In full-fender action at Canandaigua, it was Zack Shove winning his first 20-lap Pro-Stock feature. Richard Briggs earned his fourth Street Stock feature win in the time shortened 10-lap Street Stock feature.

The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Chuck Hebing dart from his outside pole starting spot to lead Vic Coffey and Pat Ward into the first turn. Crowd favorite, Bob McCreadie broke going down the backstretch and was able to drive his car into the pits. On lap 11, Coffey slowed with mechanical woes going down the front chute and ducked into the infield, leaving second to Ward. Ward continued in second nearly a full straight away behind Hebing. Ron Smoker was now running a distant third followed by Chuck Bower, Gary Tomkins and Danny Johnson. A good battle for sixth was being run by Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller, as these two diced with lapped traffic.

On lap 26 the action slowed when Ward looped his Gypsum Express number 42p in the first turn, for the only yellow flag of the race. Ron Smoker moved into second, but on the restart he was not able to keep Hebing in sight as Hebing again drew away from the field.

At the finish line it was Hebing by a full second over Smoker. Bower finished third followed by Tomkins and Johnson. The race lasted 14 minutes and 2 seconds for an average speed of 74.860 mph. Hebing was so dominate he also set fast time of the race on lap three with a lap of 18.785 seconds.

The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature saw two aborted starts following first turn crashes which eliminated three cars before the third attempt proved to be the best. When the field finally got rolling it was Ricky VanNeil with the lead followed by John Plumb, Eldon Payne Jr., Paul Guererri and Karl Comfort. On lap eight, VanNeil exited the race into the infield leaving Plumb with the led of the race. Comfort, running in third, then attempted to drive high around both Plumb and Payne through the third and fourth turns on lap 10. This move was successful and Comfort took over command of the race. One leap later the yellow flew as Plumb slowed on the track with a flat right rear tire.. During this yellow the number 76, driven by Rob Bussey, came to a steaming halt in the fourth turn, as Bussey bailed from his cockpit.

The restart saw Comfort maintain his lead over payne Jr., Steve Gray and Joe Beyea. The yellow flew again, on lap 13, when Payne blew a hose on his 28P, dropping liquid in the first turn. A number of cars were sent spinning off the track on the wet surface. This moved Gray into second.

The restart saw Gray challenge Comfort for the lead. One final yellow flew, on lap 17, when division points leader, Justin Haers slowed on the backstretch with a flat tire. He pitted and quickly returned at the back of the pack.

Comfort held on for a .497 second victory over Gray. Guererri came home in third followed by Beyea and Plumb. The race took over 32 minutes to complete.

The 20-lap Pro-stock feature saw the yellow fly following the first lap as Rick Kline climbed the cement wall in the first turn and exited the track. Following a lengthy caution period to retrieve his number 34k, the race resumed with Patrick Hobbs in the lead. Hobbs held off John Rutkowski for three circuits, until Zack Shove passed Rutkowski for second on lap four. The front six cars were all running "under a blanket" for the entire race.

On lap nine the yellow waived again when Steve Miller looped his Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the third turn. The restart saw Shove able to take the lead from Hobbs. However the green stayed out for just three laps until Scott Fremouw hit the fourth turn wall on lap 12 to bring out the yellow.

Shove held off Hobbs and Lee Burnett on the restart. On lap 14 the cars of Kevin Smith and Jon Miller came together exiting the second turn to bring out the fourth, and final, yellow of the race.

Shove held off Jipp Ortiz by .432 second for the victory.

Chad Homan worked his way into third at the finish line, followed by Burnett and Boyle. Hobbs, who led half of the race and ran in second almost the rest of the event drifted high in the second turn on lap 18 and finished sixth.

The 12-lap Street Stock feature saw 23 cars answer the call, with Chris Jacobs leading the field for two straight yellow flagged laps. The second yellow saw Jimmy Brown flip his number 74x machine exiting the second turn. Brown emerged uninjured from his upside down car.

Finally on the third lap the field was able to maintain green conditions with a single file restart. Jared LaBarge took the lead from Jacobs as Richard Briggs took second, also passed Jacobs. Briggs then passed LaBarge on lap nine for the lead. On lap 10, as the field exited the fourth turn, the number 8z, driven by Adam Delong, was shoved into the inside wall and sent flipping end over end, coming to a stop on it's side. A fire started in the engine compartment, as safety crews freed Delong from his car. As the race had run 30 minutes to that point, officials called the race complete with Briggs as the winner. Only two more regular Saturday nights of racing remain at Canandaigua in the 2001 season. This Saturday will feature a full Four Star program, starting at 7 p.m.. The planned Late Model race has been eliminated from the schedule. On Saturday, September 1, the track points will end as the DIRT Modifieds will be featured in twin 25's. The DIRT Sportsman and Pro-Stocks will also run 25 lappers that night. The final two Saturday nights before Labor day begin at 7 p.m..

The final race of the year will be the Top Gun One Shoot-Out, on September 15, featuring a 50-lap ARANY Pro-Stock Championship run, along with a 25-lap Street Stock main and Mid-State Vintage racers. That show will start at 5 p.m. sharp.
