TOMKINS TOP FRAREY MEMORIAL AT CANANDAIGUA
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Gary Tomkins, from Clifton Springs, NY, came home the big winner last Saturday, winning the "Hoot" Frarey Memorial at the Canandaigua Speedway. Joe Beyea topped the caution filled 20-lap DIRT Sportsman while Blaze Regina won the special 12-lap Mini-Sprint feature. In full fender action it was Mike Cooper with the 20-lap Pro-Stock main and Frank Burnell for his third straight Street Stock feature.
The 35-lap Hoot Frarey Memorial started off with pole sitter Ron Smoker taking the lead over Chuck hebing, Vince Vitale and Pat Ward. The first yellow flew on lap five when Vitale looped his car in the third turn. The restart saw second place runner, hebing, make contact with the fourth turn cement leaving Gary Tomkins to inherit second.
Tomkins tried to challenge Smoker on the inside and raced side-by-side down the front chute, but to no avail. On lap 10 the yellow flew for the third time when young talent Tim McCreadie coasted to a stop in the fourth turn. He quickly exited to the pits and returned at the back of the field.
Smoker continued to show the way with Tomkins nipping at his heels. Danny Johnson blew passed Ward for third on lap 19 and then proceeded to close the gap on Tomkins in second. By lap 28, Johnson was making it a three way race for the lead, trying the high line around the half mile oval.
Tomkins reacted by trying the high line also and was able to pass Smoker for the lead through the third turn on lap 29. From that point on Tomkins rocketed away leaving the battle for the runner up position to Smoker and Johnson.
The final yellow flew on lap 33 when McCreadie again slowed in the fourth turn. This set up a green-white-checker finish that saw Tomkins come home the winner by 1.55 seconds over Smoker. Johnson finished third followed by a photo finish between Tim Fuller and Pat Ward for fourth. By the transponder Fuller was awarded the position by a mere .004 seconds.
A crash filled Sportsman 20-lapper took nearly 30 minutes to complete, registering an average speed for the race of just 22 mph. Two yellow flag flew for the first lap. The original yellow flew when Phil Lavare slowed on the front stretch. the restart saw a multi-car accident in the first turn.
When all was straightened out Wade Czymmek was the leader followed by Joe Beyea, Willy Decker and Paul Guererri. Beyea passed Czymmek on lap 10 for the lead. Guererri passed Czymmek for the runner up position on lap 13.
The yellow flew on lap 18 when Eldon payne Jr. spun backwards down the back stretch, stopping just before the back straight flaggers' stand. The restart saw Just Haers make heavy contact with the inside first turn concrete wall and go sailing across the first turn landing on all four wheels. He was incensed with Karl Comfort and showed his displeasure reaching into Comfort's cockpit and ripping an air hose from his mounts. He was later fined for his actions.
The restart saw Beyea remain the leader and sail home with the win. Guererri finished second followed by Steve Gray, Willy Decker and David Allen.
Mike Cooper led all 20-laps to win the Pro-Stock feature, his second victory of the year. Jipp Ortiz passed Cooper with one lap remaining, but drove too high down the backstretch, allowing Cooper to duck back by him for the lead and the victory. Jon Miller finished a close third followed by Chad Homan and Billy Brown. Four yellow flags slowed the pro-stock feature, all for minor spins.
The Street Stock feature was shortened by two laps following five yellow flags in seven laps. Frank Burnell took the lead from james henry on lap nine. Henry finished in second and was followed by Mike Welch, Tim Burnell and Jared LaBarge to make up the top five.
A special, postponed, appearance by the Central New York Mini-sprints saw Blaze Regina take the 12-lap feature, followed closely by his teammate Cory Sparks in second.
Only one yellow flag slowed the race. That came on lap seven when second place runner Dennis Fink looped his machine in the first turn.
The worst accident of the night came in the first Mini- Sprint heat race when Bruce Brown hooked wheels with another car, sending him flipping high into the air in the first turn following the initial green. Brown landed hard but was talking to officials on the scene.
This Saturday Canandaigua Speedway will be hosting a regular Four Star show including Street Stocks, Pro-Stocks, Sportsman and Modifieds. race time will begin at 7 p.m. sharp.
