VIC COFFEY SURVIVES TO CLAIM THIRD MODIFIED MAIN OF THE YEAR; CANANDAIGUA, NY...Vic Coffey survived six yellow flags to claim his third win of the year at Canandaigua Speedway last Saturday evening. Paul Guererri earn the victory in the DIRT Sportsman 25-lap main. In full fender action Adam DePuy won the 15-lap Street Stock feature and Jipp Ortiz won the 20-lap Pro- Stock main. The start of the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Jeff Brownell Je. take the lead with Shannon Whaley challenging. These two broke away by three car lengths before a rash of yellows flew. On lap five, Darryl Ruggles brought out the initial yellow when he slowed going down the back stretch. On the restart Gary Tomkins got crossed up in the second turn and was hit from behind by John Pfeffer. The second attempt to restart the main saw Dale Darling tag the front stretch concrete and had the front end on his 48x collapse. Finally following numerous realignments and yellows it seemed that the race would resume. Chuck Bower took the lead with Brownell jr. in tow. But one lap later the yellow was out again when Ron Cartwright Jr. sailed over the fourth embankment. One lap later the yellow flew for Brian Michels, who spun out in the same spot in the fourth turn. Bower now was leading Vic Coffey, Steve Paine and Ron Smoker. Paine started to move up on lap 17 taking to the high side of the back stretch to pass Coffey. The next lap he ducked to the low side of the back stretch and tried to get by Bower for the lead. Bower was able to hold him off. On lap 21 the yellow was out again this time for a spin by Whaley in the second turn. The restart saw Coffey get by both Bower and Paine to grab the lead. Coffey then began to stretch his advantage. At first his lead hovered in the two second range. But after getting into lapped traffic Coffey took the checkers nearly six seconds in the lead. Paine came home in second followed by Chad Brachmann, Smoker and Haers. Bower fell back to finish seventh. Randy Chrysler was the first 358-Modified across the finish line to earn victory lane honors. The 25-lap saw Loren Lincoln leading nearly three-fourths of the race. At first he was able to hold off David Allen. When Dick park Jr. passed Allen on lap seven, Lincoln was able to race side-by-side with Park Jr. and still maintain his lead. From lap eight to 15 it was Lincoln vs. Park Jr.. On lap 16 Lance Dusett took his run at lincoln and fell short. What finally spelled the end to Lincoln's lead was the yellow flag! Two earlier yellows had flown. On lap two for a three car jingle in the second turn and on lap five for a tangle on the inside of the fourth turn involving Gus Hurlburt and Mike Johnson. Each time Lincoln had been able to maintain his advantage. Now on lap 18 the yellow was out when newcomer Eric Heffernan slide off the first turn and into the Jersey Barrier. On the restart Paul Guererri made his pass on Lincoln stick. Guererri even had to hold off Lincoln one more time when Rick Miller looped out in the first turn on lap 20 to bring out the yellow. Guererri took the win followed by Scott George, Dusett, Eldon Payne Jr. and Lincoln. The 20-lap Pro-Stock main turned out to be a great race. Daryl Hilkert took off to an early lead with Jipp Ortiz in tow some seven cars back. By lap five Ortiz had caught Hilkert, but a mistake by Ortiz, going too high in the fourth turn caused Hilkert to again open up a seven car lead. Again Ortiz caught Hilkert. On lap 15 it was Hilkert's turn to go too high in the third turn allowing Ortiz to draw along side. Following a side-by-side duel Hilkert came out in the lead. On lap 18, Ortiz swung to the high side of the back stretch and passed Hilkert for the lead. One lap later, with the white flag flying, late arrival at the speedway, Bill Hallett, ducked low and was able to get by Hilkert for second. Chad Homan and James Henry rounded out the top five finishers. A post race protest on the Ortiz car was posted by Hilkert. As of this writing nothing was found illegal with the Ortiz car. The 15-lap Street Stock main also got off to a rocky start with a three car tangle on the low side of the fourth turn on the first lap. Daryl Barrett was credited with leading that first lap. From that point on it would all be Adam Depuy in the lead. Numerous problems existed in realigning the field following cautions as no one seemed to want to freeze the field when the yellow came out. A number of drivers tried to advance themselves under the yellow. At the checkers its was Depuy with the win followed by Blane Smith, Nick Dandino, Mike Murphy and Mike Welch. LEGENDS' LEDGER: It was great to see Troy Griffin back at the speedway. Troy has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. A benefit was held for him in Shortsville on Friday that raised over $8,000. His one wish was that he could have one last time behind the wheel of a modified. The Ruggles family made that happen and Griffin took the 48x, usually driven by Dale Darling, out in hot laps and was able to start last in the first heat race. Come feature time Darling was back aboard the 48x...A speedy surface was not kind to starter Dave Farney, who was celebrating his 50th birthday. A rock sailed into Farney's forehead giving him the gift of a large lump. This Saturday the Patriot Sprints return for their second appearance at the speedway. Black Rock Speedway, the Patriot's home track, will be running the sprinters the night before, Friday and then come back with a special show not involving the sprints on Saturday. This allows the sprinters to join Canandaigua for the night. They will be joining the DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and Street Stocks in a five Star program. Starting time will be directly at 7 p.m. sharp in order to complete this packed program. CANANDAIGUA WINDOW CLEANING PLUS-THE COMFORT ZONE STREET STOCKS HEAT 1: D. Barrett, R. Peters, B. Smith, M.
