SIX DIFFERENT WINNERS AT THE LAND OF LEGENDS CANANDAIGUA, NY...It was make up night at Canandaigua Speedway last Saturday as the Pro-Stock and Sportsman features from May 1 were finally able to be recorded in the record books. Jipp Ortiz took top honors in the 20-lap Pro-Stock main while Jon Miller added his name to the Canandaigua Sportsman Division feature win list with victory number one in the 25-lap Sportsman feature. In regular night action Gary Tomkins cruised home the winner in the exciting 35-lap DIRT Modified feature. Dan Weisner won the regular Sportsman main and dedicated the win to his fallen crew member Shane Palmer. Bill Hallett took top honors in the 20-lap Pro-Stock feature and big Mike Minutolo won the 15-lap Street Stock main. Ron Cartwright Jr. took command of the DIRT Modified feature at the drop of the green. He dropped back to second on the second lap when Justin Haers took the lead in the race. Unfortunately Cartwright Jr. was also the first caution as he slowed to a stop in the second turn on lap eight following a side-by-side duel with Gary Tomkins for the runner up spot. Haers continued to lead with Tomkins second followed by Chuck Bower, Danny Johnson and Steve Paine. Multi-time feature winner Vic Coffey was also not far behind in sixth. Darryl Ruggles slowed on the front straight, lap 12, to bring out the next yellow. This restart saw Coffey shot from sixth to third as Tomkins passed Haers for the lead of the race. As the pack exited the fourth turn on lap 16, the field was sent scrambling as Chuck Graham had the front end suddenly break on his 34g car. Shannon Whaley, to avoid contact with Graham's disabled car, slammed the outside wall and buckled under his right front wheel. Whaley was able to steer his car clear of the action and come to a stop in the first turn. Tomkins continued to lead with Haers second. However this restart saw Coffey bounced back to seventh, with Steve Paine taking the third spot in the running order. Danny Johnson was now on the move in the high line around the track. Each lap he would go high around the leaders until lap 23, when the yellow came out again as Ron White and Mike Payne got together in the second turn. Both drivers continued in the event. The restart saw Tomkins take advantage of the track and move out to a strong lead over Johnson. the final yellow came on lap 31 when Mike Payne came to a stop in the second turn. Tomkins led the parade home followed by Johnson, Paine, Bower and Haers. The average speed of the race was 79.861 mph. Bobby Parrow was the first 358-Modified across the finish line, breaking the 358-modified honors built up by Randy Chrysler. The regular 25-lap DIRT Sportsman main saw Rick Miller take the lead until a lap four restart when Dan Weisner then took command of the race. A number of early race cautions slowed the race but the long green run to the checkers from lap seven on made for a quick average speed of 79.315 mph, just a tick slower then the modified main. Weisner took the win nearly a full straight away (3.149 seconds) ahead of last years track divisional champion, Paul Guererri. Todd Henderson, Eldon Payne Jr. and Ricky VanNeil rounded out the top five runners. The 20-lap Pro-Stock feature was one of the most exciting races of the night. Following a scary spin on a lap two restart by Scott Fremouw, that nearly saw him pile up his Chevrolet on the inside first turn cement, the real race was on. The early laps were marked by three side-by-side, row-by-row duels between the top six cars. Lap after lap they circled the half mile speedway in position, and at speed to the delight of the crowd. Chad Homan was recorded as the leader during most of these laps. But on lap nine Roger Chrysler inched ahead. Homan was again recorded as the leader on lap ten. A two car spin in the second turn, between Matt Grubbe and Scott Fremouw brought out the yellow. Two laps after the restart Bill Hallett ducked low and passed Homan for the lead. Hallett then pulled out to a .8 second lead at the checkers. he was followed across the finish line by James Henry, Jipp Ortiz, Homan and Chrysler. Hallett averaged 74.301 mph in his victory. The usual ecstatic Hallett seemed somewhat subdued as he explained the victory came largely due to his daughter altering her wedding plans and reception during the afternoon so he could race that evening. The last of the regular features was the 15-lap Street Stock main. Mike Minutolo took the lead from Darren Phippen on lap six and sailed home the winner. Mike Welch, Darren Phippen, Rocco Conte and returning veteran Nick Rizzo rounded out the top five finishers. In the early evening make up features from May 1, sixteen Pro-Stocks answered the call for the start with Billy Brown and Daryl Hilkert pacing the field to the green. Hilkert immediately took the lead in an event that was to go green-to-checkers. On lap nine Jipp Ortiz ducked low exiting the second turn and passed Hilkert going down the backstretch. Jipp then pulled out to a 7.288 second lead at the finish, nearly a full half lap ahead of Roger Chrysler, who passed Hilkert on the last lap for second. Following Hilkert in fourth and fifth were Chad Homan and Bill Hallett. The race averaged 82.842 mph on the nearly perfect racing surface and proved to be the fastest feature race of the evening. The 25-lap rain delayed sportsman main was also clipped off at the fast pace of 80.884 mph. Jon Miller beat Rick Miller into the lead and never gave up his advantage during the race. Despite five yellow flags, the race was run at near record pace. A lap seven crash in the first turn saw Rob Bussey's car damaged enough to have to sit out most of the qualifying races for the regular night's program. His crew were able to get him back out for the second feature of the night. Likewise Lance Dusett exploded a motor on lap 13, ending his racing for the night. The remainder of the yellow flags were all for minor spin outs. At the finish it was Miller beating out Eldon payne Jr. by .42 seconds. Scott Schrader came home in third with Todd Henderson and Dan Weisner rounding out the top five. This Saturday will be Castle Car Care Products night featuring a regular program of DIRT Modified, Sportsman, Pro- Stock and Street Stocks, plus the first ladies race of the year.
