HEBING TAKES PATRIOT RUN AT CANANDAIGUA
by Gary Spaid

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Chuck Hebing, from nearby Ontario, NY, powered his Terrell's Potato Chips Maxim to his second Patriot Sprint Car victory at the famed Canandaigua Speedway last Saturday, July 3. Hebing, who also won in August of 2003 at that speedway, overcame a mistake and penalty on his part to claim this win.

The start of the Bobcat of Buffalo A-Main saw the yellow fly as Rich Swarthout, who had started in sixth, spin his Nichols Financial Services machine to the outside of the first turn. This forced a complete restart with Swarthout at the rear of the field.

When the green finally flew it was Bryan Howland shooting from his inside second row starting spot who was able to take the lead. Pole sitter Mike Lauterborn moved to the high groove and challenged Howland. Howland, from Auburn, was able to keep his lead as Chuck Hebing moved into third to keep Lauterborn busy.

Howland moved out to a six car lead by lap seven. But just a quickly as he had been able to built his lead he was again being challenged by Lauterborn by lap eight.

George Suprick, from Clark Summit, PA, moved into the picture taking fifth on lap 11, following a three way battle with George Ely and Blake Breen. Suprick, who has four Patriot A-Main wins in 2004, including the May race at Canandaigua, now tried to pass Breen for fourth. Lapped traffic was now forcing the leaders to scramble both high and low around the speedway. Lauterborn's car seemed to slow some, allowing hebing to take second on lap 14.

On lap 15 the yellow flag flew when Kyle Drum, who had slammed the fourth turn concrete, slowed with a broken rear suspension. The rear end in his car was broken lose, forcing him to stop in the first turn.

On the restart Hebing duck beneath the restart cone off of the fourth turn. This move did not gain any positions but was a violation of the Patriot rules. Hebing was able to pass Howland for the lead on lap 16.

The yellow flew again, lap 17, when Mark Schulz and B-Main winner Gary Troutman came together on the front stretch resulting in Schulz spinning into the infield on the front stretch.

Troutman was able to gather his machine up and continue. On this restart Patriot Officials imposed the penalty on Hebing, moving from the lead to third. This moved Howland back in front.

The restart saw the red flag fly as Matt Gerber flipped his number 39M in the first turn. Gerber emerged uninjured, but out of the event.

The next restart saw Lauterborn hop a wheel and lose control, finally spinning in the first turn. Bobby Breen also spun to avoid contact with Lauterborn. The fourth attempt to complete the lap was the charm. On the restart Hebing shot by both Blake Breen and Howland for the lead.

Hebing came home the winner followed by Breen, Howland, Ely and Suprick.

CANANDAIGUA NOTES: Bill Hebing, fresh of a NASCAR Modified win at Spencer Speedway the night before, found the dirt somewhat challenging. In just his second sprint car appearnce Hebing flipped his car during pre-race practice. He came back in the B-Main, but just fell short of qualifying...The Canandaigua race was a double point event for the Bobcat of Buffalo Patriot Sprinters.
