STEVE PAINE PULLS DOWN ANOTHER WIN AT CANANDAIGUA; McCREADIE DEBUTS NEW BICKNELL CAR

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Steve Paine, from Waterloo, NY, visited the Canandaigua Speedway victory lane for the second time in 2003. Paul Guererri, from Geneva, NY, topped the DIRT Sportsman feature. Both drivers became the first repeat winners in five races at Canandaigua. Chad Homan won the Pro-Stock feature, while Adam Depuy, both drivers from nearby Macedon, NY, took top honors in the Street Stock main event.

On lap four,Bob McCreadie, aboard his new Bicknell chassis number 9, shot by early feature leader Charlie Donk on the high side exiting turn four to take the lead. McCreadie immediately started to stretch out nearly a half straight away lead over Donk, who had his hands full with trying to keep Steve Paine at bay in third.

Paine took second from Donk on lap 14 and started to close the gap McCreadie had been able to establish. Vic Coffey grabbed four, with Chuck Bower in fifth. On lap 16 the yellow flew when Brian Michaels slowed on the front stretch with a flat tire. This yellow bunched the field together and ruined McCreadie's strong lead over Paine. During this yellow Donk drove into the pits, giving up his third place run.

On the restart McCreadie choose the high grove for the start, with Paine to his inside. Paine out dragged McCreadie for the lead. Both As the lap was being complete the yellow flew for Darryl Ruggles who had come to a stop in the fourth turn.

On this restart Gary Tomkins and Steve Gray both were able to pass McCreadie. Paine now stretched his advantage to a full straight away over Tomkins. McCreadie fought back to retake third from Gray on lap 23.

Paine sailed home with a strong victory, winning by 5.585 seconds over Tomkins. McCreadie and son Tim McCreadie came home in third and fourth, with Gray rounding out the top five.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature looked like a, "Who can win this race on the first lap?" type of event. Jon Miller took the lead from his outside pole starting spot. Right away the yellow flew as Phil LaVare and Loren Lincoln were both victims of a huge pushing-and-shoving match in mid-pack. Lincoln was able to return at the back of the field.

Miller now led Paul Guererri, Taunya Lovejoy, Dan Wiesner and Richard Briggs. On lap five the yellow flew when one car slammed into Gus Hurlburt, sending him spinning in the back stretch.

Laps eight through thirteen were trying at best as four yellows flew during that five lap segment slowing the average speed of the race to below 25 miles per hour.

The final seven laps saw only one yellow as Miller continued to lead Eldon Payne Jr., Guererri and John Pfeffer. On lap 16, Rob Bussey made contact with the first turn wall. The restart saw a three wide charge for the lead between Miller, Payne Jr. and Guererri, as the latter two ducked under Miller in the second turn. Guererri emerged in the lead followed by Miller, Wiesner, Payne Jr. and Pfeffer. They would all hold their positions to finish in that same order.

The 20-lap Pro-Stock main saw Brian Thompson take the lead at the drop of Ben Vitale's green flag. Former track champion, Jipp Ortiz showed some great sportsmanship as he looped on the front stretch on lap three, but continued without bringing out a yellow. Chad Homan ducked under Thompson on lap four to take the lead, with Frank Guererri Jr, right on his back bumper.

The first and only yellow of the event came on lap 10 when Scott Fremouw came to a stop in the fourth turn, apparently with a fire under the hood of his number 3 Chevrolet.

James Henry charged into second behind Homan with Ortiz now in third. On the final lap Henry drifted high in the first turn and made contact with the wall. He spun around and continued only losing a couple of spots on the track.

Homan took the win, followed by Ortiz, Guererri Jr., Henry and Fred Arden took fifth.

The 15-lap Street Stock main saw early leader Nick Rizzo go up in smoke on lap three to bring out the yellow. This gave over the lead to Nat Peckham, who on the restart spun in front of the field going through turn four. Peckham emerged in tact and returned at the back of the starting field.

Now multi-time winner Mike Welch was in the lead followed by Adam Depuy and Blaine Smith. Smith took second and on lap nine made contact with the back of Welch's machine sending him spinning down the back stretch. Smith, who was going to be placed at the rear of the field pitted and later returned.

Now Depuy found himself in the lead. Depuy held off new comer Dave Marcuccilli for the win. Marcuccilli came home a strong second followed by Peckham, Tim Burnell and Vance Vanderwall.

This Saturday finds Canandaigua Speedway extremely busy as the regular Four Star show of DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro- Stocks and Street Stocks is joined by the new Patriot Sprint organization. In the Modified division the teams will be running the annual Taney Memorial 50, a Memorial Day Weekend tradition.

Race time this Saturday will begin just slightly before 7 p.m. to make room in the schedule for all divisions to be completed.
