"LITTLE-FOOT" BEATS "BARE-FOOT" IN DIRT MAIN; WIESNER EARNS FIRST EVER SPORTSMAN FEATURE
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Tim McCreadie beat his father Bob McCreadie to the finish line last Saturday at the Canandaigua Speedway to earn his second in a row, third total, DIRT big block feature of the season. Dan Wiesner was able to dominate the DIRT Sportsman feature to earn his first ever Sportsman feature victory. Jipp Ortiz (Pro-Stock) and Adam DePuy (Street Stock) both returned to victory lane in their respective divisions.
The 35-lap DIRt Modified main saw third place starter Darryl Ruggles lose his motor in the staging area. Phil Vigneri led the first two laps when Vince Vitale passed him and pulled out to a three car advantage over Vigneri, Chad Brachmann and Bob McCreadie. tim McCreadie was flying through the field, taking third from Vigneri on lap five and then looking to his father, now in second.
Tim made the pass on his father exiting the fourth turn on lap six. He then chased down Vitale and passed him two laps later. tim then drew away to establish a twenty car lead over his father as things started to settle down on a long green flag run.
On lap 25, the yellow flew when Ray Bliss seemed to lose a motor. Steve Paine then looped his number 7x in the third turn, then collected Vic Coffey and Vitale. All were able to continue from the rear of the field.
One more brief yellow flew on lap 27 when John Plumb spun out in the second turn.
Tim McCreadie sailed home the winner of the Doug McWilliams Memorial followed by Bob McCreadie, falling again just short in his search for win 100 at the "Land of Legends". Gary Tomkins, Steve Paine and Charlie Donk rounded out the top five finishers.
The 20-lap Sportsman main event saw Jon Miller take the lead from his pole starting position. A massive pile up, involving five cars, between turns one and two forced officials to restart the feature from the start. Again Miller to command of the race.
On lap four the yellow flew as Dale Kissel slowed on the track. Kissel has been plagued with transmission troubles all year long.
On the restart Dan Wiesner took the lead over Miller, Loren Lincoln and Frank Burnell. Miller stayed even with Wiesner for the next six circuits not wanting Wiesner to establish a lead margin of any kind. On lap 10 the yellow flag waved when Dick Park Jr. looped his number 3d in the second turn.
Miller attempted to pull along side of Wiesner a number of times. It wasn't until Paul Guererri and Eldon Payne Jr. joined the battle at the front that Wiesner was able to establish a lead by himself through lap traffic.
With just one lap to go Miller now had Payne Jr. and Guererri even with him at the line. Wiesner sailed home the winner by just 1.8 seconds over Payne Jr., Guererri and Miller in that order. Lincoln came home a strong fifth.
Twelve cars answered the call for the start of the Pro-Stock feature. James Henry quickly took the lead from his outside pole starting spot. Henry tried to pull away, but Jipp Ortiz broke free of the pack at the same time and chased down Henry, passing him for the lead on lap eight.
With just five laps remaining Ortiz was then able to pull out to a seven car lead over Henry. Chad Homan, running in third, caught up with Henry and kept him busy allowing Ortiz to establish his lead.
Ortiz took the checkers nearly 2.6 seconds ahead of Homan, who passed Henry as they exited the fourth turn on the last lap. Henry finished in third followed by Daryl Hilkert and Fred Arden. this green-to-checkers race proved to post the fastest average speed for the evening with an average of 79.533 mph, completing the race in just 7 minutes and 33 seconds.
Thirty cars were on hand for the start of the 15-lap Street Stock main.
The yellow flew as the field crossed the start-finish line on the first lap. Leader, Eric Chapman lost control and spun across the front stretch in front of the entire field. All the cars made it through the melee.
On lap two, Adam DePuy took the lead on the restart with Mike Minutolo in tow. An inside fourth turn wall banger by Chris Hogan on lap three brought out the second yellow of the event.
Minutolo took the lead on the restart only to lose it right back to DePuy.
Three additional yellows slowed the race. In the end it would be DePuy with the win followed by Blane Smith, Minutolo, Dave Marcuccilli and Nick Rizzo.
This Saturday, July 5, the speedway will help to celebrate the Nation's Independence with the addition of the Patriot Sprint cars and fireworks to the weekly program. It will be Corvettes by Turner Automotive and Pick-n-Pull night at the track. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
The Canandaigua Speedway is located at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, just east of the village of Canandaigua on County Road 10.
