FULL NIGHT OF RACING AT CANANDAIGUA SEES EIGHT DIFFERENT FEATURE WINNERS
CANANDAIGUA, NY...The full night of racing at Canandaigua Speedway was put into motion the week before when the generator blew up, forcing officials to cancel the remainder of that program to be run on Saturday. The delayed features were won by Billy Decker (Modified), Paul Guererri (Sportsman) and Daryl Hilkert (Pro-Stock). Following these races a complete regular show was run starting at 8:15 p.m..
In the regular night's program feature wins went to Tim McCreadie (Modified), Eldon Payne Jr. (Sportsman), Chad Homan (Pro-Stock), Leroy Lewis (Street Stock) and a special Central New York Mini-Sprints 15-lap feature to Doug Norrie.
The delayed DIRT Modified feature from June 14, saw Tim McCreadie pass Ray Bliss on lap four for the lead. McCreadie's lead was for just a brief time as smoke billowed from his Sweetener's Plus machine on lap eight, allowing Bliss to retake the lead. Bliss held on until lap 14 when Billy Decker shot past him for the lead. Decker held on throughout the remainder of the race to claim his second feature win in a row at Canandaigua.
Following Decker across the finish line were track points leader Steve Paine, Bob McCreadie, Ray Bliss and Matt Sheppard rounding out the top five.
Eight cautions slowed the race causing the event to last 33 minutes. All of the cautions were for minor spin outs or cars stopping on the track. Chuck Bower was not even able to take the green as his left front hub assembly came off his car on the pace lap.
The 20-lap delayed Sportsman show went caution right at the start when John Pfeffer was forced into the front stretch wall by his sister Amy. On the restart rookie Steve Cheesman took the lead only to lose it to Wade Czymmek on a lap four restart. the yellow on lap three appeared when Rob Bussey flip his number 76 while in third place following contact with the car of Frank Burnell.
Czymmek lost the lead to Paul Guererri on lap 17 as the two front cars were attempting to negotiate lapped traffic. Czymmek swung high in the fourth turn, allowing Guererri the pass. the race was almost immediately yellow flagged when Amy Pfeffer lost a wheel entering the first turn.
Guererri took the win, also his second in a row at Canandaigua. Czymmek came home in second followed by Scott Joy, newcomer Jeff McGinnis and Dick Park Jr..
The 20-lap delayed Pro-Stock race saw three different leaders and only two yellow flags. Chad Nugent took the early lead. He was followed closely by James Henry and Daryl Hilkert. On lap 17 Henry made his move for the lead only to see his race end prematurely when, under yellow for a flat tire on the Nugent car, officials spotted water flowing out from under his car. He was black flagged to the pits allowing Hilkert to inherit the lead.
Hilkert held on over the last two circuits for the win. He was followed across the finish line by Billy Brown, Fred Arden, Jipp Ortiz and Tiger Chapman.
The regular night's 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw Vince Vitale take the lead at the drop of the green. Vitale was then passed by Tim McCreadie, in a new Sweetener's Plus car, on lap five.
Six yellow flags slowed the race, but each time McCreadie was able to hold off the competition for the victory. Steve Paine passed Gary Tomkins on the second to last lap to take second. However Tomkins fought back to reclaim the position at the checkers. Decker finished a somewhat distant fourth with Ray Bliss rounding out the top five finishers.
In the 20-lap Sportsman race Amy Pfeffer returned after making repairs to her car to lead the first lap. Rob Bussey, who also repaired his car following the first feature roll over, pass Pfeffer to lead the second lap. But then Todd Henderson took over and began to dominate the race, pulling out to a five car lead over Eldon Payne Jr., who took second from Bussey on lap four.
Payne Jr. closed the gap and on lap 10 passed Henderson for the lead. Payne Jr. then built up a full straight away lead to claim the feature victory. Henderson come home in second followed by Bussey, John Pfeffer and Richard Briggs.
The Pro-Stock feature again saw Chad Nugent take the lead at the drop of the green. Chad Homan grabbed the front spot on a lap three restart, only to lose the lead back to Nugent on the very next lap. Homan then retook the lead on lap five and never looked back. Jipp Ortiz came home in second followed by James Henry, Nugent and Fred Arden in fifth.
The first feature winner Daryl Hilkert saw his fortunes fall apart following a flat tire on lap three that cost him a lost lap in the pits.
The 15-lap Street Stock feature saw 28 cars take the green. Tim Burnell was the early leader. the first lap was yellow flagged however following a roll over by Steve Washburn in his beautiful number 38 Pontiac. The restart saw Burnell maintain his lead. On lap nine Leroy Lewis had caught and was able to pass Burnell for the lead, when Burnell swerved high in the fourth turn, allowing the pass on the low side.
Lewis took the win followed by Blane Smith, who was closing in on the leader over the last two circuits. Nat Peckham, Dave Marcuccilli and Nick Dandino rounded out the top five finishers.
Also on hand were the Central New York Mini-Sprints Cory Sparks led the first five laps of the 15-lap feature only to see his race end when he was gathered up, from the rear, on a lap six restart that also saw another car flip into the rear of the Sparks machine.
This left the race lead to second place runner Mike Emhof. Emhof was able to maintain his lead over the next eight laps. On lap fourteen Doug Norrie passed Emhof for the lead, as Emhof swung high in the fourth turn. This also allowed Matt Norrie to take second. On the final lap Brian Howland passed Emhof for third. Don Harvey came across the finish line in fifth.
Canandaigua Notes: General manager Jeff Farney helped to show his appreciation of all the fans have gone through the last two weeks at Canandaigua by offering $1 hot dogs and hamburgs for one hour during the races. "We owe these fans a whole lot after last week sitting in the dark as we tried to fix our generator problems," stated Farney...Danny Johnson made his first appearance of the season at Canandaigua. His race hopes in the second feature ended when he spun in the third turn on lap eight and had to be towed off the track...114 cars were on hand for the night's races, which lasted some five hours. Fans were treated to some 21 races including qualifying hears.
This Saturday, June 28, racing returns to Canandaigua as the Ontario County Fairboard presents the Doug McWilliams Memorial. All four classes of cars; Modified, Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and Street Stocks, will be in action. Race time will be 7 p.m., with pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m..
