BLANE SMITH WINS AS LIGHTS GO OUT AT CANANDAIGUA UNDER FULL MOON CONDITIONS

CANANDAIGUA, NY...It may have been the full moon, but most likely it was a well worn generator that finally gave up the ghost. Track crews fought hard to first start up the track generator and then worked hard to fix the over heated unit. But when all was said the crack in the generator engine block was just too much to over come and the Pro-Stock, Sportsman and Modified features were delayed until this Saturday.

On Saturday, June 21, gates at Canandaigua will open at 4 p.m., to allow for a 6:30 p.m. start for the make up features. Following these features a complete program will be run, including the addition of the Central New York Mini-Sprints. Due to the fact that over half the race program had been run (11 heat races, a mod consi and the Street Stock feature), rain checks will not be honored this Saturday.

"We tried our best to get the generator running again," stated track general manager Jeff Farney. "I am sorry the fans had to wait so long for us to attempt a fix, but we did our best."

The feature that did get in was the 15-lap Street Stock main event, won by Blane Smith.

Thirty cars answered the call to the green with Nick Rizzo blasting into the lead from his pole starting spot. But as the lap was completed, Chris Hogan rolled his number 83H up on top of the second turn wall to bring out the red flag.

The restart saw Mike Rasbeck break a right front suspension piece as he slide off the second turn to bring out the yellow. Rizzo remained the leader with Tim Burnell, Steve Washburn, Vance Vanderwall and Leroy Lewis making up the top five.

On lap six the yellow flew for debris on the track. The restart saw Burnell make contact with Rizzo, sending Rizzo spinning to the infield of the fourth turn and bringing out the yellow again. Burnell was placed to the rear of the field, as was Rizzo. This left Lewis as the leader.

Lewis could only hold back Mike Welch for just one lap. Welch took the lead on lap eight. On lap 10, the race was red flagged when officials said it was becoming too dark for the drivers to safely see around the track.

Track crew jumped the generator and the lights came on. the race was completed with Blane Smith passing Welch for the lead on lap 13. Smith went on for the win followed by Welch, Lewis, Dave Marcuccili and Steve Washburn rounding out the top five.

As the victory lane photos were being taken the lights around the track snapped off as the generator blew. This would spell the end of racing for the evening following valiant efforts to make repairs.

Racing this Saturday will begin at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Be sure to be early as a the three delayed features will be followed by a complete program including the Central New York Mini-Sprints.

Canandaigua Speedway is located just minutes east of the village of Canandaigua, NY.
