PAINE ENDS SWEETENERS DOMINATION OF VICTORY LANE, HENDERSON THREE IN A ROW
AND BLANE SMITH TOPS B.O.S.S. TOUR ROUND THREE

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Steve Paine, who has not been in victory lane since mid-May, returned for his third win of the year to break the Sweeteners Plus teammates, Tim McCreadie and Vic Coffey, four week domination at Canandaigua Speedway. Todd Henderson won his third straight 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature. Jipp Ortiz dominated the Pro-Stock main event, while local runner Blane Smith won the special 25-lap B.O.S.S. street stock feature.

The start of the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Ray Bliss grab the lead from the pole and the yellow flag unfurl when Ron Cartwright Jr. spun out in the second turn. Bliss continued the lead until lap five when Matt Sheppard, as if shot out of a cannon, sailed by both Bliss and John Plumb, from third to first. One lap later, Sheppard's mentor, Steve Paine passed him for the lead. Paine then pulled away to secure a ten car advantage.

Three additional yellows flew during those first six laps, all for minor spin outs around the track.

Tim McCreadie seemed to be the fastest car on the track, however his fate was sealed when a flat tire, on lap 19, along with problems under his Sweeteners Plus machine side lined him for a number of laps. Fan favorite, Billy Decker also suffered similar fates, finally leaving the race on lap 22.

In the closing laps Paine held a 2.8 second lead over Sheppard, Coffey, Gary Tomkins and Chuck Bower a more distant fifth. When the checkers fell the order remained the same. this was Paine's third win of the year at Canandaigua.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature also saw the yellow fly after one circuit when Frank Burnell spun coming out of the fourth turn in front of the field. Taunya Lovejoy was the only car collected in this melee. Up front Amy Pfeffer saw her lead evaporate when Rob Bussey swept by both her and second place Steve Doell for the lead.

Bussey was able to maintain his lead as a battle for second developed behind him between Eldon Payne Jr. and Todd Henderson. Payne Jr. shot high exiting the second turn on lap eight to pass both Henderson and take the lead from Bussey entering the third turn. A radius rod laying on the front stretch caused the yellow to fly on lap 12.

The restart saw Payne Jr. drift extremely high in the third turn allowing Henderson to take the lead. Try as he might, Payne Jr.'s efforts fell short at the finish line with Henderson winning his third DIRT Sportsman feature in a row. Payne Jr. came home in second followed by Paul Guererri, Bussey and Dan Wiesner.

The highly competitive Pro-Stock feature saw four different leaders during the 20-lap affair. Brian Thompson led laps one and two, only to lose the lead to James Henry on lap three. Henry then proceeded to spin out in the second turn to cause a yellow and hand the lead over to Chad Homan. Homan then led the next eleven circuits, when he was passed by a fast approaching Jipp Ortiz. Ortiz then sailed to a 1.5 second lead over Homan at the finish. Fred Arden, Henry and Thompson rounded out the top five finishers.

Some 36 B.O.S.S. Street Stocks were on hand, with much of the field being made up of local weekly runners. Four heat races were run and won by Dave Mannise, Blane Smith, Mike Minutolo and Rocco Conte. these four drivers then competed in a four lap dash in which Mannise took the win.

Twenty-four cars took the green flag with Mike Minutolo taking the lead with Mannise in second. Mannise fell out of the race on lap three leaving Mark Loveland in second. Blane Smith passed both Loveland and Minutolo, taking the lead, on lap four. Loveland then brought out a yellow as he spun in the second turn on the next lap.

Smith proceeded to pull away from Minutolo, but the yellow flew on lap eight to bunch the field together again. The yellow had flow for Dave Marcuccilli, who stop on the back stretch.

Don Whiteside performed an excellent spin and go on the front chute, lap 10, after getting nudged around. He ended up losing a lap in the process.

The yellow did come out again on lap 12 when Nat Peckham lost a rear wheel while running in third. His team replaced the lost tire and he returned to the back of the field for the restart.

A two car spin in the third turn slowed the race on lap 15 one more time. By now Mike Welch was a solid second,as both he and Smith seemed to be in a race of their own at the front.

The final yellow came on lap 20 when Darren Phippen lost a wheel in the third turn and came to a stop on the track. During this yellow, sixth place runner Rocco Conte pitted, out of the race.

Smith led the final five laps to take the victory in Round 3, of 6 rounds, in the B.O.S.S. series. Welch came home in second followed by Adam Depuy, Minutolo and Kevin Pangrazio. For his victory Smith picked up the Josh Comp bonus for winning back-to- back events.

This coming week will be Taylor Rentals of Canandaigua night at the track. In conjunction with the Speedway, Taylor will be offering a $100 bonus to the first 358-Modified across the finish line during the Modified/358-Modified feature. Also up for grabs will be a Sunoco Syracuse starting spot for the first 358-Modified across the finish line. Taylor and the speedway also upped the payoff for Street Stocks paying back ten positions in place of the regular five spots. For the Pro-Stocks Taylor and the speedway will be offering a special hard charger cash award. Race time at Canandaigua will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
