COFFEY BEATS THE RAIN, HENDERSON BACKS UP HIS SPORTSMAN WIN WITH SECOND IN A ROW

CANANDAIGUA, NY..Despite rain throughout the region Canandaigua general manager Jeff Farney made the decision to go ahead with the Saturday night show at Canandaigua Speedway. With a number of speedways in the area closed an excellent turnout in the pits was one of his rewards. Secondly a lightning fast speedway, thanks to the hard work of the entire Canandaigua track preparations crew.

Vic Coffey kept the Sweetener's Plus lock on victory lane, as teammate Tim McCreadie was trying to go for four in a row in the DIRT Modified ranks. Todd Henderson made it two wins in a row in the DIRT Sportsman division. Jipp Ortiz claimed his six Canandaigua Pro-Stock victory of the year and Blane Smith returned to victory lane in the Street Stocks division.

Three yellow flags started the modified main event. A four car melee in the second turn involving Mike and Ray Bliss, Chuck Hebing and Allen Willoughby slowed the first lap with John Plumb in the lead. On lap two the yellow flew as Tim McCreadie had a flat tire with Phil Vigneri recorded as the lead.

Coffey passed Vigneri for the lead on lap four and never looked back as he built a ten car lead. Chuck Bower followed Coffey and blasted into a solid second some seven car lengths ahead of Matt Sheppard in third. Plumb and Steve Gray came together in the fourth turn on lap seven to cause yet another yellow. Gray would cause a yellow on lap 13 as he slowed on the back stretch.

On lap 16, the bird cage suspension broke in Bower's Currier Plastics number 99b, ending his great run in second. Coffey now was ahead of Gary Tomkins in second, with Sheppard in third. On lap 27, Sheppard drifted high in the fourth turn allowing both Steve Paine and Billy Decker by for the position.

One lap later, the crowd in the grandstands by the start- finish line, could hear Karl Comfort's motor expire with a loud clicking noise to bring out the final yellow of the race.

Coffey went on for the win followed by Tomkins, Paine, Decker and Sheppard.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw a complete lady front row; Amy Pfeffer and Taunya Hance Lovejoy. Both ladies also won their respective heat races making for the first time that two women have won heat races on the same night at Canandaigua Speedway.

At the drop of the green Lovejoy scooted into the lead with Rick Miller in second. Miller then passed Lovejoy for the lead on lap two. he then proceeded to build a substantial lead over Lovejoy, Frank Burnell and Todd Henderson.

Lap eight would see two pile ups. The first came in the fourth turn involving Gus Hurlburt, Rob Bussey, Dan Wiesner and Steve Cheesman. On the restart Miller spun in front of the entire field in the first turn collecting Richard Briggs, Bill Englert and Phil LaVare. This left Frank Burnell as the leader on the restart. He was quickly passed by Henderson on the very next lap.

Henderson would lead the final ten circuits by as much as a full straight away. On lap 17, Jon Miller made the move of the race, passing two cars through the fourth turn, to take second.

Henderson took the checkers followed by Jon Miller, Eldon Payne Jr., Paul Guererri and Loren Lincoln. Sportsman track points leader, Guererri was back at the track thanks to a number of people who helped him build a new Bicknell car in just one week after totally his car the week before in a turn one accident while leading.

The 20-lap Pro-Stock feature saw Jipp Ortiz take the lead from Daryl Hilkert on lap six. Ortiz then built up a full straight away lead as the 20-laps went green-to-checkers. Chad Homan finished some seven car lengths ahead of James Henry for third. Fred Arden rounded out the top five finishers.

Daryl Barrett parleyed his pole starting spot into leading the Street Stock feature for some seven laps. Barrett blue Monte Carlo held a solid lead over Tim Burnell and Mike Minutolo.

A lap seven restart, that bunched the field together, saw Minutolo pass Barrett for the lead. Minutolo would then lose the lead on a lap nine restart following a back stretch wall banging incident involving Dave Marcuccilli. Blane Smith was now in the lead.

Smith would take the win followed by Minutolo, Mike Welch, Adam Depuy and Barrett.

This Saturday the BOSS Street Stock Tour joins the regular program at Canandaigua Speedway. Street Stocks will have to draw for starting position this Saturday.

It is Sweeteners Plus night at the speedway and autograph night. A number of teams have agreed to show up at the track by 3 p.m., assembling on the front straight away, to sign autographs for the race fans. Pit gates will be opening at 3 p.m. on Saturday to allow the teams to get ready. Races will start, as usual, at 7 p.m. sharp.
