BIZARRE FINISH IN THE SPRINTS SEES TIM BARNARD TAKE HIS FIRST CANANDAIGUA WIN, McCREADIE TRIPLES UP AT "LOL"

CANANDAIGUA, NY...The Patriot Sprint cars were on hand to help celebrate Independence Day Weekend at Canandaigua. Kyle Drum held nearly a three-quarters lap lead on Tim Barnard, when he spun out on the final lap. This caused the yellow and checkers to fly ending the race and causing a real scoring nightmare. After much confusion, the results were posted with Barnard as the winner.

In the regular Canandaigua DIRT program Tim McCreadie came home with his third straight modified victory. Todd Henderson won the DIRT Sportsman feature. In full fender action Chad Homan won the Pro-Stock main while Mike Minutolo won the Street Stock feature.

The 20-lap Patriot Sprint feature got off to a rough start when Rick Wilson and George Ely looped in the second turn. Chris Mulheisen's right rear tire dug into the clay sending him flipping and landing on top of the Wilson machine. With the red flying the entire field coasted to a stop. None of the drivers involved were injured.

The restart saw Kyle Drum blast into the lead as if shot out of a cannon. Drum built up nearly a half straight away lead when the yellow flew with Don Bellen and Billy Wolf coming together in the fourth turn.

Drum now seemed to have his way with the rest of the field, lapping cars at will. On lap 19 he took the white flag a full three-quarters of a track ahead of Tim Barnard, who had passed Jared Zimabrdi for the runner up position on lap 17. As Drum sailed through the second turn he seemed to lose control and spin to a stop on the inside of the turn. Starter Dave Farney then threw the yellow and checkers ending the race. Barnard was declared the winner following a long session with scoring.

The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature rolled out around 10:45 p.m. just making the curfew on a long night of racing. Chuck Bower took the lead from his outside pole starting spot over Vic Coffey. Also in this feature the yellow flew early, lap two, when Shannon Whaley spun in the first turn.

Bower continued his advantage over Coffey and began to stretch out nearly a seven car lead. Karl Comfort was in third followed by Steve Paine and Darryl Ruggles. Tim McCreadie, who started 18th, was able to break into the top five by lap 14 when he passed Ruggles.

On lap 19 the yellow flew as Whaley again spun out in the second turn. Steve Paine passed Coffey on the restart to take second. One lap later McCreadie had Paine for the runner up spot. McCreadie then closed in on Bower, making several attempts at getting around the leader. On lap 28 he made an outside pass down the back stretch to take the lead.

Billy Decker, who started near the rear of the field due to a spin out during his heat race, looked to be the fastest car on the track. He was in the top five, when he suffered a flat tire and slowed to a stop in the fourth turn to bring out a late race yellow, lap 30.

The five lap dash to the checkers saw McCreadie take the victory, his third in a row at Canandaigua. Bower held on for second followed by Paine, Gary Tomkins and Matt Sheppard to round out the top five.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw the yellow fly immediately also when Walt Chyrywaty and Rick Miller came together in the first turn on lap two. Richard Briggs was the leader followed by Steve Doell, Dan Wiesner and Todd Henderson. Henderson was able to take second on lap five and try to start to chase down Briggs who now held a ten car lead.

Multi-time feature winner Paul Guererri now entered the picture, taking third from Wiesner. Eldon Payne Jr. also made his way into fourth, passing Wiesner on lap seven. Guererri then passed Henderson on lap 12 and Briggs on lap 14 for the lead.

Guererri was about to have his great run ended when he made contact with the lapped car of Dale Kissel with just three laps remaining in the race. Both cars had to be towed off the speedway.

This placed Henderson in the lead where he stayed for the remaining three circuits. Payne Jr. came home in second followed by Briggs, Wiesner and Scott Joy.

The 20-lap Pro-Stock feature may well have been the best run of the night. James Henry took the lead at the drop of the green. Once again the yellow flew on the first lap when Chad Homan and Jipp Ortiz came together in the fourth turn. The restart saw Roger Chrysler inched ahead of Henry at the finish line to grab the front spot.

Homan and Ortiz were now "on a mission" as they sailed towards the front of the field. Ortiz was in second by lap eight with Homan right on his bumper. They both began to challenge Chrysler for the lead. On lap 10 Ortiz tried an inside move in third turn and drifted high, allowing Homan to duck under both himself and Chrysler for the lead.

Ortiz then challenged Homan, but fell just short at the finish line. Homan took the win followed by Ortiz, Henry, Chrysler and Fred Arden.

The 15-lap Street Stock main saw Mike Minutolo start in the front and immediately take the lead as 25 cars answered the starter's call. Only one yellow slowed Minutolo's win, that coming on lap 11 for a multi-car pile up.

Following Minutolo across the finish line some ten cars lengths back was Mike Welch. Tim Burnell came home in third followed by Vance Vanderwall and Blane Smith, who took the Hard Charger Award of a case of oil after starting in last place.

This Saturday will be Victor Excavating & Landscaping and Dewey Auto & Tire Center night at Canandaigua. A full card of DIRT racing is scheduled to take place with a 7 p.m. starting time.

The Canandaigua Speedway is located at the Ontario County Fairgrounds just east of the Village of Canandaigua on County Road 10.
