JOHNSON TOPS FINGER LAKES 100, SCHULZ TAKES SECOND WIN OF THE WEEKEND ON EMPIRE SPORTS NETWORK TOUR

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Alan Johnson, from Phelps, NY, returned to win his second Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series event at Canandaigua Speedway last Saturday. Johnson, who won the earlier race in August, took home $6,000 for the Jim Beachy Motorsports team. Dave Schulz, from Somerset, NY, won the 25-lap Empire Sports Network feature to strengthen his points lead in the Pro- Stock Tour. Schulz won the night before at Ransomville Speedway in a tour event.

Other winners on the evening included Mike Murphy in the Street Stock 16-lap feature. The Mid-State Vintage Race Club was also on hand with feature wins going to Brad Litzenberger (50's), Pat Sonnenberg (60's) and John MacNamee (70's).

Following nearly a two hour delay for rain, the 100-lapper topped an extremely full program. The green fell on the race at 10:35 p.m.. Alan Johnson, who had redrawn the outside pole, took the early lead at the drop of the green. The first yellow flew on lap four when Tim Fuller slowed on the front chute with tire troubles. He pitted and lost just two laps, as all laps had to count due to the late starting time.

Johnson continued his lead with Bob McCreadie running a distance second. Tim McCreadie, Chuck Bower and Billy Decker made up the top three runners by lap 20. On lap 23 the yellow flew for the second time when A.J. Romano coasted to a stop at the exit of the fourth turn. Romano had to be towed back to the pits.

On the restart, Alan Johnson allowed Bob McCreadie the high line and McCreadie shot into the lead. Bower also passed Tim McCreadie for third. Two laps later Ed Monroe looped his car in the third turn to cause the third yellow of the race.

McCreadie still maintained the lead over Johnson. On lap 36 Steve Hulsizer shot off the third turn and came to a stop off the racing surface to cause yet another yellow. This time Johnson took back the lead on the restart.

Bower ducked low in the fourth turn and took second from McCreadie. On the move, however, was Brett Hearn. Hearn, who had taken third, passing McCreadie around the high side of the second turn, began to challenge Bower. On lap 44, Hearn surged into second and began to close the gap on Johnson. The yellow flew on lap 46 when Pat Ward slowed on the front straight. Billy Decker also ducked into the pits just before the halfway mark in the race while running in fifth.

On the restart Hearn tried to high side of Johnson in turn three. He then tried the low side for a pass, taking the lead on lap 51. Johnson immediately fought back and ducked low exiting the second turn to retake the lead. Johnson then drew out to a three car advantage over Hearn, only to see the yellow fly as Randy Miler slowed in the third turn.

Two more yellows slowed the race during the second half of the event. On lap 68 Darryl Ruggles slowed in the fourth turn and on lap 81, Hearn slowed on the track with a broken drive line, ending a great run.

Johnson cruised home the winner followed by Bob McCreadie, who picked up the guaranteed starting spot for the Eckerd 200 in Syracuse during Super DIRT Week. Bower finished third followed by Bobby Varin, driving the former Todd Burley number 98B. In fifth, passing Charlie Donk for the position on the last lap, was Chuck Hebing. The race averaged 61.782 miles per hour and took 48 minutes to be run.

The 25-lap Pro-Stock race saw pole sitter Dave Schulz lead the entire distance. However on the start he held back leaving the pole starting spot open in honor of the late Les Whyte. Chad Homan and Jon Miller were in a hard fought battle for second until late in the race. The only yellow of the race came on lap 10 when Zack Shove looped on the inside of the fourth turn. The restart saw the yellow remain out when Daryl Hilkert looped in the fourth turn.

Schulz took the win by .416 seconds and averaged 57.828 miles per hour. He also set fast time of the race on lap four, turning the track with a 21.970 second lap. James Henry passed both Miller and Homan to take second with just five laps remaining in the race. Homan came home in third followed by Tom Barron, who passed Miller with for the spot on lap 15.

Roger Chrysler won the 5-lap "Top Gun One" Dash-for-Cash in honor of Les Whyte. Heat wins went to Schulz, Homan and Tiger Chapman. Tom Cannizzaro won the consolation race.

The Street Stocks were to have run a 20-lap feature, but following eight yellows and one red flag the race had to be time shortened to just 16 laps.

Lee Zimmerman led the first 12 laps, losing the lead to Mike Murphy on lap 13 when Murphy ducked low in turn one. One lap later the race had to be red flagged when Eric Chapman flipped his number 22 Chevrolet on the front stretch, ending up against the outside cement wall. Chapman emerged uninjured and it was announced the race would run just two more laps using a green-white-checkered finish. Murphy held off the challenges of Zimmerman over the final two laps and secured the win. Zimmerman finished second followed by Mike Welch, Nat Peckham and Jared LaBarge.

This ends the year at Canandaigua Speedway. The management would like to thank all of the racers, crews officials, sponsors and fans for their support during the year. Canandaigua is scheduled to reopen in April 2003 under the DIRT Motorsports banner.
