"FAST-FOOT" McCREADIE TOPS TANEY MEMORIAL 50

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Tim McCreadie, from Watertown, NY won a memorable Taney Memorial 50 lapper last Saturday at Canandaigua Speedway. Following a full week of working on the speedway by a dedicated track crew, the track surface was still the talk of the week. Eldon Payne Jr. won a emotional 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature, dedicating his victory to the late Mark Zona's ill father. Zona was a record holding sportsman driver who passed away. His late career was centered around building motors for many of the sportsman teams. "I had to take him to the hospital this morning," stated a tearful Payne Jr. in victory lane. "We want to dedicate this victory to him while we can."

In full fender action an elated James Henry won his first Pro-stock feature. In the street stocks it was Leroy Lewis taking the victory.

Randy Miller was the first leader of record in the 50-lap Taney Memorial for DIRT Modifieds. Miller held off a charging Bob McCreadie, who ducked low through the fourth turn to take the lead on lap four. McCreadie then began to pull away leaving Miller in second followed by Steve Gray, Greg Hixson and his son Tim McCreadie. On lap eight the first yellow flew as Miller drove low into the second turn but exited the turn scrapping the outside concrete wall and stopping in the turn.

McCreadie now found his son Tim in second and Bob had to turn the fastest lap of the race, lap 10, with a 19.852 second circuit. On lap 12 the yellow flew when Darryl Ruggles looped his mount in the first turn. The restart saw McCreadie vs. McCreadie, but suddenly rookie modified driver, Steve Gray charged by Tim for second and started to close in on Bob. On lap 26 Gray drove low at the exit of the second turn and passed Bob for the lead. Gray then did to Bob what McCreadie had been doing earlier, Gray started to pull out a two second advantage.

McCreadie was not done yet as he caught Gray and then began to pressure the youngster for the lead. Tim joined the fray at the front. Bob retook the lead on lap 35, when Gray drove high in the first turn. These three top runners saw their show end on lap 41, when Bob broke what seemed to be a shock and abruptly stopped on the inside the second turn with Tim passing Gray for the lead. The restart saw Tim pull away from Steve Paine as Gray fell back to third. By the end of that lap Gray had pulled his car into the pits and out of the race.

McCreadie held off a late race challenge by Paine in the second turn to claim the victory at the line by .802 seconds. Gary tomkins finished in third with Vic Coffey and Jeff Brownell rounding out the top five. Both Mary and Betty Taney, former wives of Fred and Denis Taney for whom the race is dedicated, were in victory lane with the younger McCreadie.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature started off with a number of yellows, but settled into a long green flag finish. Gary Hoteling led the first lap only to lose the lead to John Pfeffer on a restart following Paul Guererri slowing on the track. Pfeffer then lost his lead to Eldon Payne Jr. on a lap three restart after Wade Czymmek stopped in the second turn.

On lap five multi-time winner John Plumb took second from Pfeffer and took off after Payne Jr..

The last yellow flew on lap nine for a piece of metal in the second turn. Payne Jr. held off Plumb over the last 11 laps to take the victory by a full three seconds at the line. plumb finished second followed by Pfeffer, Randy Chrysler and Todd Henderson.

The 20-lap Pro-Stock main saw James Henry lead the entire distance from his outside pole starting spot. Henry first held back Phil Barone, who suffered a flat tire on lap five, after contact with Mike Cooper in the second turn, to cause the yellow to fly. Following the restart, Henry had "Big" Mike Cooper on his tail. Cooper came to a stop on lap seven with a broken tie rod.

Former track champion Jipp Ortiz was hot on Henry's tail followed by Zack Shove, Jon Miller and Roger Chrysler. On lap 10 Chrysler took third with Miller challenging all of the time. Miller powered by two laps later for the position. On lap 14, Ortiz tried to duck under Henry in the fourth turn but fell short as the two leaders raced side-by-side for a lap.

On lap 16, Henry inched back in front as Miller drove low in the second turn and took second from Ortiz. Ortiz tried to return the move a lap later. However Ortiz found his car looping to the inside of the fourth turn with just one lap remaining. On that final lap Chrysler moved by Miller for second. Daryl Hilkert made a move to the inside of the fourth turn and found himself on top of the cement wall. Miller held on to finish third followed by Chad Homan and Shove.

The 15-lap Street Stock feature started off with Mike Welch leading the field with the top ten cars all challenging, every lap, for the lead. On lap five the yellow flew as Bob Maxwell slowed on the front chute. Welch held on for just one more lap and then lost the lead to Tim Burnell. The race was yellow flagged for debris on the back stretch. Burnell then held on for just one more lap when he was passed by Mike Minutolo. Minutolo had his race end with a flat right rear tire on lap 11, as the yellow flew for a slowing Tim Burnell on the track.

The final charge to the checkers saw Welch again in the lead with Leroy Lewis on his rear bumper. Lewis completed his pass for first with just two laps remaining in the race. Welch finished second but was disqualified in post race inspection. This moved Adam Depuy into second. Jerry Condren, Jared Labarge and Jim Cologgi rounded out the top five.

This Saturday will be Local 3298 United Steel Workers night at Canandaigua.

"We'll be working on the problems we encountered with the track all week long," stated general manager Jeff Farney. "We still need that week of somewhat warmer temperatures and dry weather. So far the forecast looks to be in our favor."

Race time on Saturday will start at 7 p.m. sharp with gates opening at 4:30 p.m.. Canandaigua Speedway is located just east of the village of Canandaigua, NY, at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, County Road 10.
