DECKER AND CHRYSLER DOUBLE AT CANANDAIGUA
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Billy Decker charged to victory twice last Saturday at the Canandaigua Speedway. First he won the curfew delayed 35-lap Wilberts Buick and GM Parts feature, lucking into the win following an accident between the first and second place cars. Decker then won the Phelps Cement 35-lap feature in front of a very cold crowd. Randy Chrysler also produced the double victory. Jon Miller won the 20-lap Pro-Stock feature while Mike Rasbeck won the 15-lap Street Stock feature.
The night started off with the curfew delayed sportsman and modified features from the week of May 11. Bob McCreadie jumped out in front to a seven car advantage over Chuck Hebing, Jeff Brownell and Billy Decker. This lead became a two second lead by lap 10. Suddenly Hebing began to close as McCreadie entered lap traffic. Hebing shortened the lead to just .4 seconds by lap 20.
As McCreadie exited the fourth turn on lap 23, Hebing powered by for the lead at the start-finish line. Hebing then began to build his own advantage. Then on lap 27, as Hebing exited the second turn, Hebing lost the left rear wheel. The wheel went sailing down the backstretch and it looked as if McCreadie would be able to retake the lead. McCreadie made contact with Hebing and the two of them spun to the high side of the back stretch allowing the third place car, Billy Decker to take the lead.
Decker held off young Tim McCreadie for the remaining seven laps to take the win by .928 seconds. Tim McCreadie finished second followed by teammates Steve Paine and Vic Coffey. Gary Tomkins rounded out the top five.
The Sportsman curfew delayed race started off with a yellow when Gary Hoteling came to a halt in the fourth turn with John Pfeffer in the lead. Pfeffer continued to hold off Paul Guererri, Richard Briggs and multi-time feature winner John Plumb. On lap eight the yellow flew for the second time when Dan Wiesner came to a stop at the exit of the second turn.
On the restart Randy Chrysler took the lead from his third place start, as Pfeffer fell back to sixth. Guererri tried to chase down Chrysler, but Chrysler extended his lead. Guererri was now in a battle with Plumb for second. Plumb took the position on lap 14. Chrysler took the win by .959 seconds over Plumb.
Guererri finished third followed by Wade Czymmek and Rob Bussey.
A full card of regular night races followed, with all of the heat races being completed by 9 p.m. on this cold night.
Ray Bliss Jr. took the lead at the start of the 35-lap regularly scheduled Modified feature. Bliss, who has not had the greatest of luck, pulled away to a solid seven car lead over Tim McCreadie. McCreadie closed this gap and by lap seven, exiting the fourth turn, ducked low to pass Bliss at the line for the lead. On lap 11 the yellow flew when Steve Gray broke the suspension on his car and slowed to a stop on the back stretch.
McCreadie now led Vince Vitale as Bliss exited to the pits with mechanical woes. On lap 14, Decker blew by Vitale for second and closed the five car lead held by McCreadie. Three laps later Decker was side-by-side with McCreadie, taking the lead as the pair exited the second turn onto the backstretch.
Decker then built a full straight away lead over McCreadie, who found himself battling first Gary Tomkins and then again with Vitale. Decker took the win with an average speed of 74.869 mph. Tomkins finished some 4.745 seconds back in second. Vitale nipped Mccreadie at the line by .005 seconds for third. Vic Coffey rounded out the top five. Decker's win made him a $4,000 night winner.
The Sportsman 20-lap feature was riddled with yellows for the first half of the race. Rookie Gus Hurlburt led the first three laps, two under yellow. On lap two Gary Hoteling came to a stop in the fourth turn. The third lap saw a wild multi-car melee take place entering the first turn.
On the lap four restart John Plumb took command of the front spot with Randy Chrysler in tow. Two more yellows on lap eight and nine slowed the race. Both yellows were for cars slowing on the track. Up front Chrysler and Plumb were dicing back and forth, with Plumb remaining in the lead. With just one lap remaining Plumb looped his car exiting the first turn all by himself, allowing Chrysler to take the lead as the yellow flew. It was now a one lap dash to the checkers. Chrysler took his second win of the night followed by Wade Czymmek, Paul Guererri, Eldon Payne Jr. and Loren Lincoln.
The 20-lap Pro-stock feature also saw it's share of yellows. James Henry led the first four laps, three under yellow. Jon Miller was able to take the lead on the front stretch on lap five. Miller then extended his advantage over Henry, who was now in a battle with Roger Chrysler for second. Two more yellows followed, lap 10, when Jipp Ortiz looped his car in the second turn and lap 15 when Henry had a right rear flat. This last yellow allowed Chrysler to race solidly in second.
Over the closing laps Miller extended his lead to some twenty car lengths, winning by 3.222 seconds over Chrysler. Ortiz worked his way back to third over the last ten circuits. Kevin Smith, his first night out this year, came home in fourth. Mike Cooper rounded out the top five.
The 15-lap Street Stock feature saw Mike Rasbeck led all fifteen laps. The worst wreck of the night came in the last turn, of the last lap of the event. Chris Jacobs caught a rut and flipped his number 17J over some five time in a side-by-side roll, landing on top of the inside fourth turn wall. Jacobs was shaken in the accident but remained at the track.
Following Rasbeck across the finish line were Mike Minutlo, Adam DePuy, Tim Burnell and Jared LaBarge. Minutlo made a gallant charge at the win, but fell short by inches at the line in a photo finish.
This Saturday will be Comstock HVAC/R L.L.C.-Document Reprocessors of New york and Canandaigua Motors night, presenting the Taney Memorial. The DIRT Modifieds will compete in a 50-lap feature honoring past driver Denis Taney, and race track officials Fred and Kelly Taney. A complete program of Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and Street Stocks will also be on hand for this Memorial Day weekend event. Race time will start at 7 p.m. sharp.
