CURFEW DELAYS MODS AND SPORTSMAN TO THIS SATURDAY, ORTIZ AND BURNELL TOP FULL-FENDER ACTION
by Gary Spaid
CANANDAIGUA, NY...The presents of the ESS sprint cars, rain showers and full fields of cars prevented the complete card at Canandaigua Speedway from being completed before the 11 p.m. curfew. Remaining on the docket, and the first features on the schedule this Saturday and the Sportsman and Modified main events. While Brian Dumigan won the ESS race, Jipp Ortiz made it two in a row in the Pro- stock division and Tim Burnell topped the time shortened Street Stock feature.
The 20-lap Pro-Stock feature hit the speedway at 10:25 p.m., following a rain delay and an ESS B-Main. This event would prove to be one of the best Pro-Stock features ever run at Canandaigua. Daryl Hilkert took the early lead closely pursued by Dave Conant Jr., Phil Barone and Chad Homan.
On lap three Barone passed Hilkert for the lead by mere inches at the line. Jipp Ortiz and Mike Cooper now found themselves in a side-by-side battle for third. Cooper put it all together and drove by Ortiz and Hilkert to take second. Ortiz completed his pass on Hilkert and three car break away by Barone, Cooper and Ortiz took place up front. Just as sudden as these three broke away from the pack, the pack, led by Roger Chrysler, caught back up at lap 10.
On lap 16 Cooper pulled alongside of Barone on the main straight. This allowed Ortiz to duck low in the first turn, forcing a three wide turn. Ortiz moved into second as Cooper fell back to third. On lap 18, Barone drove too low into the second turn exit and up onto the infield grass. This maneuver saw him drop back to fifth with just two laps remaining.
Ortiz led the mad panic coming out of the fourth turn with Cooper again hot on his tail pipes. Two time winner, Jon Miller, was now a close third with Chrysler fourth and Barone fifth.
Ortiz took the checkers by .623 second in front of Miller, who passed Cooper through turns three and four. Cooper finished third followed by Chrysler and Barone. This 20 lap feature went green-to-checkers and took only 7 minutes and 51 seconds to complete at an average speed of 76.505 mph.
The 15-lap Street Stock main event is also a timed event at fifteen minutes. With 28 starters on the wet track many felt the race was destine to only last a few laps. The huge field did an excellent job of completing the first two laps. On the second circuit Ken Fletcher came to a stop on the back stretch causing the yellow flag to fly. Jim Cologgi was leading followed by Kevin Collins and Mike Cuppernell.
On lap four multi-time feature winner, Mike Minutlo pulled alongside of Cologgi and Collins in a three way battle for the lead down the front stretch. Minutlo came out ahead, as Tim Burnell ducked low in turn two to pass both Collins and Cologgi for second. On lap five, Burnell charged low in the second turn and passed Minutlo for the front spot.
The yellow flew on lap seven as a multi-car tangle in the fourth turn saw Kyle LaVare loop his car and then get tagged, head on, by the cars coming through the turn. Involved in the melee were Daryl Barrett and Richard Kline.
Burnell led the restart as Brian Lloyd seemed to jump the start. Before officials could enforce any penalty, Lloyd lost the entire right side rear axle assembly which went sailing off the first turn causing yet another yellow. With just minutes remaining the field was told it would be a green-white-checker finish. Minutlo made one last hard charge at Burnell. The charge may have been too much as Minutlo's car slid high in the first turn and flipped twice, landing on it's roof. The field charge around the track to the checkers and yellow. Burnell took the victory followed by Leroy Lewis, Chris Jacobs, Adam Depuy and Ray Cooper.
"I want to thank all of the track crews for their efforts in trying to complete the entire program," stated general manager Jeff Farney. "I only wish we could have beat the rain. We tried our best and the track remained in good condition throughout the night."
This Saturday will be All County Construction night at Canandaigua. The racing will start directly at 7 p.m. with the running of both of the curfew delayed DIRT Sportsman and Modified features, followed by a complete program. Gates open at 4:30 p.m..
