PAINE, RIZZO AND MILLER WINS BACK TO BACK MAINS; GUERERRI TOPS SPORTSMAN
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Steve Paine, from Waterloo, NY in the DIRT Modified division and Jon Miller, from Oclott, NY, in the DIRT Pro-Stock class and Nick Rizzo, from Wolcott, NY, in the Street Stock division each won their respective feature events for the second week in a row at Canandaigua Speedway. Miller picked up an extra $100 bonus for his efforts. It was Miller's fourth win of the season at Canandaigua. Geneva's Paul Guererri won his first Sportsman feature.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw Charlie Donk and Bob McCreadie fighting for the lead during the first half of the race. McCreadie was finally able to shot by Donk on the high side on lap seven. Donk recovered to challenge McCreadie, running side-by-side across the finish line on lap 12. For his efforts, Donk looked as if he would have to settle in behind McCreadie. As for McCreadie, win number 99 at Canandaigua looked as if it would happen. The problem they both faced were Steve Paine and Gary Tomkins, who were the fastest cars on the track and both had caught the leaders.
On lap 23 the yellow flew just as Paine passed McCreadie exiting the second turn on the low side. Tim McCreadie's Finch's Trucking number 56 had come to a stop in the first turn. The restart saw Donk's number 99 suffer a flat right rear tire and slow on the front stretch. Joe Beyea took evasive action and spun through the infield to avoid contact with Donk. During this second yellow Gary Tomkins turned his number 84 pitside for new rubber.
Paine now had Chuck Bower on his rear bumper as Bob McCreadie was also making a resurgence in third. Vic Coffey was running an aggressive fourth and passed McCreadie on lap 29 for third. McCreadie dropped back to sixth. Paine was able to build a 1.6 second lead over Bower at the finish line. Bower came home second followed by Coffey, Vince Vitale and Tim McCreadie.
The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature saw Rob Bussey take the early lead. A lap four restart saw the biggest accident of the night take place, when five cars came together in the fourth turn. The restart from this yellow saw Randy Chrysler take the lead followed Bussey, Paul Guererri and John Plumb.
On lap 16 Chrysler slowed down the front chute with a flat left rear tire, allowing Guererri to take the lead as the yellow flew. Chrysler dove pitside for a new tire and returned at the back of the field.
Guererri, with just three laps remaining, now had to deal with Eldon Payne Jr., Plumb and last week's winner Todd Henderson. On the restart Payne drifted high allowing Plumb to take second. Then as the yellow flew, Plumb went high and Payne Jr. retook the runner up spot. Guererri took the win by just .424 seconds over Payne Jr.. Plumb came home in third followed by John Pfeffer in Ricky VanNeil's number 22. Chrysler worked his way back to fifth at the finish.
The 20-lap Pro-Stock feature saw Mike Cooper lead almost the entire distance. With just three laps remaining Jon Miller drove high exiting the second turn to pass Cooper down the back stretch. Two yellows slowed the race. On lap six Andrew Joy spun in the third turn and on lap eight Phil Barone slowed going through the east end of the speedway and Dave Conant Jr. slammed into the back of the Barone machine. Neither driver was injured.
Miller took the win. Cooper took home second followed by Roger Chrysler who slide across the finish line against the outside concrete wall after contact with Chad Homan in the fourth turn. Homan came home in fourth with Billy Brown in fifth.
The 15-lap Street Stock feature saw Brian Lloyd take the early lead as the caution flags flew for spins on the track. On lap four Lloyd looped his car in the fourth turn, allowing Joe Mosher to grab the front spot.
Mike Welch was able to pass Mosher for the lead on a lap 12 restart, only to spin out himself, giving the lead back to Mosher. Mosher found himself in the pits following a flat tire on this final yellow.
A three car battle ensued for the final two laps of the race between Adam Depuy, Nick Rizzo, who had sparks flying from his car after contact with the outside concrete wall on lap 13, and Brandon Smith. Rizzo took the close win followed by Smith, Depuy, Beetle Peters and Steve Washburn.
The Street Stockers then turned their cars over to the ladies as it was Ladies' Night at the speedway. One lady was approved before the races to drive a Pro-Truck from Black Rock Speedway. It would be this truck that took the lead with just two laps remaining from Mary Anne Minutolo to take the win. Heidi Potter, who had some racing experience in Micro-sprints came home victorious.
This Saturday will be Autogenesis and Canandaigua Motors night at the speedway. A full Four Star program of DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro-stocks and Street Stocks will be on hand. Race time is at 7 p.m. sharp.
