McCREADIE MAKES IT NUMBER 99 AT CANANDAIGUA
CANANDAIGUA, NY...There could not have been a better time for Bob McCreadie to inch one race closer to the elusive 100 victory mark at Canandaigua Speedway then last Saturday evening during the 159th Annual Ontario County Fair. The magic of the Fair shown through and McCreadie knocked down victory number 99 at the famed half mile oval.
John Plumb took the win in the Sportsman division, while full fender victories went to Roger Chrysler in the Pro-Stocks and Mike Welch in the Street Stocks. The start of racing at the Fair had to be delayed some two hours as a heavy rain storm swept through the ground around 6 p.m.. This was followed by a second dashing of rain and then followed by high humidity making track drying a task in itself. Thanks to much needed help the track was race ready by 9:15 p.m..
The 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw Ray Bliss Jr., aboard his brand new Bicknell take the lead from McCreadie at the drop of the green. McCreadie drifted high through the third and fourth turns on lap three to assume command of the race. Bliss was now second followed by Joe Beyea, Vince Vitale and Vic Coffey.
On lap six the yellow waved when track champion Steve Paine spun in between the third and fourth turns. An attempted restart was aborted, although immediately following this restart Bliss Jr. turned his car pitside with over heating problems.
McCreadie was now ahead of Beyea, who saw Coffey charge through the pack and take second from Beyea. McCreadie's large lead began to evaporate as Coffey closed the gap. Meanwhile Billy Decker was able to take third and attempt to chase down the lead two cars. Coffey made several attempts at McCreadie, even pulling alongside of him on lap 16 down the front chute. Each time McCreadie held just enough to stave off the challenge.
On lap 21 the yellow flew when Tim McCreadie and Vitale slapped together sideways on the front straight resulting in each car exploding a tire. McCreadie's tire blew up so bad as to break the rear axle and tear the side nerf bar lose from his Finch's Trucking machine.
Decker was able to pass Coffey on the restart and took off after Bob McCreadie. One more yellow, lap 28 when Joel Thomas slowed on the track after making contact with the fourth turn wall, allowed Decker one last challenge.
McCreadie was up to the task and took the victory, his first at the track since July 10, 1997. Decker finished second and pulled along side of Mccreadie on the cool down lap to congratulate him on his win. Coffey, Beyea and Gary Tomkins rounded out the top five finishers. A elated McCreadie stood on top of his Kinney Drugs Store machine and waved the flag to his admiring fans.
The 20-lap Sportsman main saw Bob Henry Jr. take the early lead in the race with Wade Czymmek on his tail. On lap five the yellow flew when Todd Henderson, Loren Lincoln and Paul Guererri came together in between the third and fourth turns. On the restart Phil LaVare and Keith Stell made contact on the front straight, with LaVare coming to a stop in the first turn. At this same time Czymmek, running in second looped his machine in the fourth turn moving John Plumb into the runner up position.
One last yellow flew, on lap 10, when Rick Miller was turned around and slide backwards into the inside Jersey Barrier in the first turn. The contact knocked Miller back across the track to come to a stop in the middle of the track.
On the restart Plumb was able to power around Henry Jr. using an outside move through the fourth turn. Plumb sailed home the winner by 1.698 seconds over Eldon Payne Jr., who took the runner up position on lap 17 from Henry Jr. Randy Chrysler also passed Henry Jr. on lap 17 for third. Henry Jr. came home in fourth followed by Dan Wiesner for fifth.
In the 20-lap Pro-Stock main Dave Conant Jr. took the lead at the drop of the green. He held that position for the first eighteen laps. On lap 19 as the two leaders Conant Jr. and Roger Chrysler exited the second turn, contact was made sending Conant Jr. spinning and Chrysler ending up in the lead. After tape review by tower officials it was determined that the contact was racing. In victory lane Roger Chrysler, who took his first win of the year with the checkers, stated that the contact between himself and Conant Jr. was, "a racing incident."
Kevin Smith finished second followed by James Henry, Chad Homan and Chad Nugent.
The final race of the evening took the green at 11:15 p.m., following a "fast and Furious" evening of racing crammed into just two hours due to the early rain. The track was just perfect now and the 24 car Street Stock main roared green-to-checkers. Mike Murphy lost the early lead with a flat tire on lap six to Mike Welch. Welch then proceeded to stretch out a full straight away lead on Blaine Smith in second. Smith would eventually record his fourth second place finish in a row. Tim Burnell made some late race passes to finish third. Jared LaBarge and Adam Depuy rounded out the top five.
