TOMKINS TAKES CANANDAIGUA WIN, GUERERRI WINS SECOND STRAIGHT AND
JIPP ORTIZ TAKES HOME THE PRO-STOCK GOLD
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Gary Tomkins, from nearby Phelps, NY, powered to his fourth Canandaigua Speedway win of the year denying Bob McCreadie his 100th career win at the track by mere inches. In the Sportsman division Paul Guererri came back from his dominating performance on Wednesday at Canandaigua's Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series to win his fifth event of the year. Guererri's car was protested and in post race inspection at the time of this story. In the Pro-Stocks Jipp Ortiz returned with his new car for the second week and turned into victory lane. Mike Minutolo picked up his seventh feature win in the Street Stock division.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw Tim McCreadie take the lead from his outside pole starting spot. A three way battle for second evolved between Bob McCreadie, Ray Bliss Jr. and Karl Comfort. Steve Gray was the first to bring out the yellow when he spun in the fourth turn and was collected by Greg Tatich. Tatich's car suffer extreme right rear suspension damage and was unable to continue in the race.
Steve Paine brought out the yellow on lap four when he spun in the first turn. Billy Decker took this opportunity to pit.
Tim McCreadie was now being challenged by his father Bob, who was in search of his 100th win at the track. Gary Tomkins, running a low line, was able to duck under both McCreadies for the lead on lap nine. Bob, using the extreme outside line, was able to inch in front of Tomkins two laps later. Tomkins did not give up and retook the lead on lap 15.
The yellow flew for the third time when Vince Vitale slowed to a stop on the backstretch on lap 18. The restart saw Bob McCreadie again take the lead with Tomkins, Chuck Hebing and Tim McCreadie in pursuit. On lap 22, Tomkins again inched ahead at the line and remained in front for the remainder of the race. Bob McCreadie finished just .578 seconds back of Tomkins. Hebing, Tim McCreadie and Chuck Bower rounded out the top five.
Rob Bussey led the first lap of the sportsman 20-lap feature only to turn his number 76 pitside on lap two allowing Todd Henderson to take the lead. Henderson then began to build a significant lead on Paul Guererri, stretching out to nearly 15 car lengths by lap 10. On lap 11 and advantage Henderson had was dissolved when Bob Henry Jr. came to a stop in the first turn to bring out the yellow.
The restart saw Guererri work over Henderson and take the lead on lap 13. Guererri then repeated his Wednesday's performance and began to stretch out his lead, winning by over 2 seconds. Henderson finished second followed by Randy Chrysler, Eldon Payne Jr. and Frank Burnell.
A post race protest of the Guererri car was issued and the Guererri car checked.
In Pro-Stock action Dave Conant Jr. again ran into bad luck. After leading the feature for eight laps he made slight contact with the inside barrier and damaged his left front suspension. For the second week in a row he picked up the JoshComp Hard Luck Award of $50. When Conant Jr.'s accident took place Jipp Ortiz was in the right place at the right time to take the lead. Jipp proceeded to drive to his third win of the year and his first in his new Monte Carlo bodied Pro-Stock. Ortiz, who started ninth also picked up the JoshComp Hard Charger Award of $50. Jon Miller finished second followed by Chad Homan, James Henry and Mike Cooper. One note is that the JoshComp Winner's Award goes up to $700 this week. If Ortiz can win again this Saturday he can pick up this extra money.
In Street Stock feature action Mike Minutolo took the lead from his sister car, driven by Brad Steinruck on lap seven and cruised home the winner. Four cautions slowed the race, all for minor incidents. Mike Welch finished second breaking Blain Smith's five week hold on that position. Nick Rizzo came home in third followed by Jared LaBarge and Tim Burnell.
This Saturday will be Canandaigua Motors and HEP sales night at the speedway. On tap will be a complete Four Star Program of DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and Street Stocks. Race time will be at 7 p.m..
On Wednesday, August 21, the 358-Modified Super DIRT Series comes to Canandaigua for the very first time. All of the small block stars and a number of locals will be on hand for this big event.
