Tomkins Uses Late Race Pass to Claim Canandaigua Speedway Victory

It’s not often Steve Paine relinquishes the lead at Canandaigua Speedway, but Saturday night Clifton Springs, NY’s Gary Tomkins made it happen.  After starting in the 13^th position, Tomkins used the outside lane to breeze by Paine on lap-33 to claim the $1,500 WNYR 98.5 FM DIRTcar Big-Block Modified feature event.

 

Derrick Podsiadlo led the first 20-laps from the outside of row one, before Paine took the top spot with a nice inside move off of turn two.  Tomkins meanwhile methodically worked his way through the field before finding the outside lane, which proved to be the difference at the end of the 35-lap event.

 

 “I think you could count the number of times on your hand that someone has passed Steve (Paine) that late in a feature at Canandaigua,” said an excited Tomkins in victory lane.  “We faded a little bit in the middle of the race, but then the top really came in for us.  I don’t know if Paine slowed down or what?  The race just came to us tonight.  I really owe this one to my crew.”

 

Matt Sheppard, Todd Burley, Charlie Donk, Podsiadlo, Chad Homan, Pete Taylor, Paul Guererri, and Gil Tegg Jr. finished the top ten.

 

In the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature it was Todd Henderson taking the lead from Dan Wiesner with 8-laps remaining to grab his first Canandaigua Speedway win of the season.  Wiesner led the first 17-laps in convincing fashion before Henderson made his presence felt.  Rob Bussey, Kevin Ridley, and Anthony Rizzardo completed the fast five.

 

Mike Welch and Marc Minutolo also took feature wins Saturday night in the UMP Street Stock and PureStox divisions.  Both Welch and Minutolo led every lap of their respective feature events to claim victory.
