Features Only Featured On Final Points Night At Canandaigua Speedway
Canandaigua, NY – August 27, 2022 – Tom Skibinski, Canandaigua Speedway PR Director
Labor Day Weekend on the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast circuit kicks off on Saturday at Canandaigua Speedway with 2022 point champions crowned in all four weekly divisions. Taylor Rental and Paine Motorsports sponsor a big night of feature racing only as the DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds, UMP/DIRTcar Street Stocks and PureStox each run double main events.
With Kids Bike Races scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., pit gates will open at 3:30, grandstand seating will begin at 5 p.m. and the first feature race will go off the line at 7 o’clock. Rain checks from the August 25 show will be honored at Canandaigua on September 1.
Already heralded as Canandaigua’s all-time points champion, Steve Paine will be out to establish himself as DIRTcar NorthEast’s all-time record-holder if he can hold on for an unprecedented eighth straight Big-Block Championship at the fairgrounds. The Waterloo warrior will have two chances to pad his five race win total as the Modifieds are slated to run a pair of 35-lappers. Nearest point chasers Chuck Bower (1 win), Charlie Donk (2) and Derrick Podsiadlo (1) will also be looking to return to victory lane at the famous ‘Land of Legends’ oval.
Paul Guererri (3 wins) and Dan Wiesner (4) are the front-runners and will need success in both Sportsman twin 25-lappers to lay claim to the coveted points championship in Ontario County. Guererri captured the ’03 track title while Wiesner is in search of his first in Ontario County. Loren Lincoln (1) and Tim Currier (2) remain in hot pursuit.
Seven-time feature winner Mike Welch just needs to take the green flag in both 20-lap Street Stock finales to collect his fourth track title at the popular Routes 5& 20 speedplant. Blane Smith (3 wins) is the only outside threat to overtake Welch while Andy Fisk (2) ranks ahead of Scott Smith (1) and Adam DePuy heading down the homestretch.
First-year full-fender pilot Marc Minutolo (2 wins) is on the brink of capturing high point honors in the PureStox division with just two 12-lap races remaining. Second-generation driver Minutolo holds a comfortable advantage over Corey Hunt (1) while Eric Chapman (5) has the most victories in this entry-level class.
Teams will take a two-week break after season point champions are declared before returning to Canandaigua Speedeway for the 2022 season-finale on Sept. 15. Mr. DIRTcar Championship events take center stage that Saturday for Sportsman Mods and Street Stocks, with a special Mod Lites Can-Am Challenge making up the big tripleheader.
Canandaigua Speedway on the Ontario County Fairgrounds is located just east of the city, with the track being easily accessible by using either Exit 44 (traveling east) or Exit 43 (traveling west) of the New York State Thruway. Additional information can be obtained by calling 585/394-0691 on raceday, during the week by dialing the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast office at 315/834-6606 and logging in anytime to canandaiguaspeedway.com.
