Wiesner & Guererri Split Sportsman Twin 25s At ‘Land Of Legends’

Canandaigua, NY – August 11, 2022 – By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua Speedway PR

Dan Wiesner and Paul Guererri each won one of the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Twin 25s run at Canandaigua Speedway on Saturday evening on Canandaigua Chrysler/Dodge night.

In full-fender action Mike Welch picked up his seventh feature win of the year in the Street Stocks. Vance Vanderwall earned his first feature win this year, taking the 10-lap PureStox feature victory. Paul Grigsby added his name to the BRP CanAm Late Model winners list with a 30-lap victory in the touring series special.

The first 25-lapper for the DIRTcar Sportsman had 27 cars take the green with Kevin Ridley taking the lead. Behind Ridley were Rob Bussey and Eric Giguere. With Giguere able to grab second from Bussey on lap seven and take off after Ridley. Bussey then began to fall backwards.

Lap 10 kicked off the first of three consecutive yellow flag laps when Bussey and Todd Henderson came together in the fourth turn while running in seventh and eighth respectively. On the restart a number of cars came together in the fourth turn. Involved were Henderson, Larry Stell and Bussey. The third yellow flew when a more cars came together, again in the fourth turn, resulting in newcomer Matt Smith rolling his number 80 onto its roof. Smith emerged uninjured.

Up front the battle was between Ridley and Giguere as a long green flag run to the finish was under way. Entering into the picture was Dan Wiesner, who restarted in third. Wiesner quickly passed Giguere for second and began to challenge Ridley. On lap 20 Wiesner made his pass for the lead. At the wire it was Wiesner followed by Ridley, Giguere, Loren Lincoln and Anthony Rizzardo.

Wiesner then pulled number eight to invert the start for the second feature. This placed Bussey on the pole and Tim Currier on the outside-pole for the start of the second 25-lapper.

On the initial green Currier took the lead with Rob Bussey, Anthony Rizzardo and Daryl Hilkert in tow. On lap four Rizzardo was able to take the second spot, but before the leap could be completed four cars came together exiting the fourth turn. Involved were Ridley, Greg Hixson, Daryl Barrett and Eric Heffernan. All of them were done for the remainder of the race.

Currier retained the lead on the restart with Paul Guererri challenging Rizzardo for second. On lap seven Guererri grabbed second and set sights on Currier, needing only two more laps to take the lead. The race remained green for the rest of the distance. At the finish line it would Guererri followed by Currier, Hilkert, Henderson and Scott Schrader.

The UMP Ferris Mowers Street Stocks ran a 20-lap main event. Pole-sitter Nathan Peckham took the early lead but started to fade some on the third lap when Adam DePuy took the lead on lap three. Peckham’s problem became visible on lap four when he lost the driver shaft causing the first yellow to fly.

On the restart the yellow flew again when Ralph Priest looped around in  between the third and fourth turns. Up front Andy Fisk challenged DePuy, taking the lead on lap seven. Mike Welch was on the march taking second from DePuy on lap 12. Welch pressured Fisk, finally passing for the lead on lap 18. One lap later Fisk looped out in the first turn as he tried to retake the front position. This set up a one lap dash to the checkers. Welch took the win followed by Blane Smith, Adam DePuy, Rich Sharpsteen, and Chris Fisher.

The 10-lap PureStox main began with leader Eric Chapman spinning between the third and fourth turns collecting a number of cars in the process. Involved in the accident were Corey Hunt, Brian Lloyd and Ross Lurcock. Chapman’s accident allowed Jim Cronin to become the leader with Vance Vanderwall in second. On the restart yellow lights came on again when Chris Guererri spun between the first and second turns. Once underway it was Vanderwall taking the lead from Cronin on lap seven and sailing home the winner. Following Vanderwall across the finish line were Cronin, Marc Minutolo, Guererri and Hunt.

Grigsby drew the number one starting spot for the second ever BRP CanAm event at the fabled Land Of Legends – Canandaigua Speedway. He led the first lap of the 30 lap A-Main.  However, he lost the top spot to the red hot Jeff Chesebro on lap two.  At that point, few gave Officer Grigsby any hope of getting past Chesebro.  As the laps quickly rolled by Chesebro stretched his lead to as much as ten car lengths, but Grigsby never quits.  Chesebro was using the outside lane while Grigsby stuck to the bottom. The outside finally bit Chese since he was running about a 5/8th mile track while Grigsby was using only a ½ mile to complete his laps.

A caution on lap 22 for a spinning Beamer Guzzardi tighten the pack.  Chese went straight to the top and Grigsby stayed on the bottom.  As the cars came to starter Dave Farney’s five to go signal Grigsby had his Integrity Home Shaw Grand Prix in the top spot.

Matt Cobb followed Grigsby’s path and swept under Chesebro on lap 29 and rode his Austin Distributors Rocket home in the runner-up spot for his best Series finish ever. Chesebro brought his McKiernan Towing & Recovery CRS Grand Prix to the checkers for the final podium spot. Steve Dixon earned the DART Hard Charger award with his very impressive run from 20th at the start to a fourth place finish. Todd Hanson completed the top five with a great run in his T&L Tiling CRS Monte Carlo.

This coming Saturday, August 18, the ASCS Patriot Sprints return to Canandaigua Speedway for their second appearance of the year. They will be joined by the second Lake-to-Lake Sportsman race and a special appearance of the Mid-State vintage racers. A full card of UMP Ferris Mowers Street Stocks and PureStox will fill out the program. Race time t 7 p.m. sharp.
