Ontario Co. Fair Race Card Topped By Welch, Keuer, Amadon & LeRoux

Canandaigua, NY – July 28, 2022 – By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua Speedway PR

The annual Ontario County Fair championships looked somewhat different this year as the Utterly Unlimitedly Unfair Enduro topped the racing bill, along with a special Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Championship Series race.

Local track point leader Mike Welch received the benefit of starting on the pole after the field was inverted. Welch proceeded to lead all 25 laps and take the $500 series win. The victory also stretched out his point lead at the track.

Adam Keuer from Geneva, N.Y. took the win in the 77-lap Enduro finale. Keuer, a local runner at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway in the weekly BattleKarz events, took over the lead with just seven laps remaining in the feature. His win was worth $1,000. “That guy in second (Gordon Whitaker) was fast,” stated winner Keuer. “I took a hit from my uncle early in the race, but hung in there.”

Barb Amadon drive her four-cylinder Enduro car to victory in a special “Crazy Chicks-n-Cars Catfight” powder puff race. Also in a support role were the Pro Trucks with Chris LeRoux taking the 12-lap feature win in that class. “I knew I had to stay on the bottom to be fast,” stated LeRoux. “As I was coming out of that last turn all I knew was not to lift, just keep the pedal to the floor.”

The 25-lap Street Stock feature began with 25 cars taking the green flag. Welch immediately jumped into the lead with Scott Smith tight on his rear bumper. The first of four yellows flew on lap three when Vance Vanderwall slowed to a stop in the first turn. He came back out but immediately suffered a flat tire and returned to the pits.

On lap five it was Mike Rasbeck’s turn to see a flat tire. Apparently debris left over around the track from the demolition derby held earlier in the week was the cause for the number of flats. On lap six the yellow was out again, this time for debris in the first turn.

Once underway, Smith tried to challenge Welch but could not pull alongside for the pass. The final yellow came on lap 13 when Kevin Collins lost a wheel exiting the second turn. Welch would lead to the checkers Alan Fisk, who just nosed out Smith followed by Blane Smith with Dave Marcuccilli rounding out the top-five.

The 77-lap Enduro featured a number of lead changes. Jeff Brown from Trumansburg had his car voted as the best looking, so he was awarded the pole to start the race. He was not able to lead a lap, however, as it would be the outside car on the front row, Bob Neiss also from Trumansburg, that shot into the lead. Neiss led from lap one through lap 19 when Buzzie Weber took the lead.

Weber led only one lap before Neiss retook the top position. With just a few laps remaining before a mandatory competition yellow, Keith Keuer took the lead after Neiss became entangled with a lap car.

Following the 10-minute break, the cars were re-aligned back up for the start of the second half of the event. At that time only eight of the 33 starters were on the lead lap.

Keith Keuer led until lap 42, when Adam Keuer passed for the lead. But it would be Keith retaking the front spot one lap later. Finally, contact with the cement front stretch wall slowed Keith and Adam took the lead on lap 51.

To start the 64th circuit it was Gordon Whitaker passing Adam Keuer for the front spot. It would take lap traffic to slow Whitaker and allow Adam back by for the lead and victory on lap 71 of 77 laps scheduled. Adam Keuer took the win followed by Whitaker, with Donald Toland in a solid third and final paying position. Jeff Brown and Barb Amadon rounded out the top -five.

The 12-lap Pro Truck race ran green-to-checkers with Chris LeRoux taking the win, just barely nosing out Terry Povoski. Povoski tried to take the lead, and did lead for one lap, but seemed to fall short on power on the long straights at Canandaigua. Jared Hill finished a distant third followed by Shawn Brace and Everett Baker.

LEGENDS LEDGER: Smith Brothers Drywall Services and Chapman Installations posted money for a special Street Stock Dash. The companies posted a total of $300 for the dash. Tiger Chapman easily won the dash and then drew an eight from the number bucket to invert the feature line-up….The Enduro feature opened with 33 cars taking the green in a three-wide standing start.

Canandaigua Speedway will see two big events next week. On Saturday, August 4, it will be Coca-Cola Kids Rules Night featuring the Big-Blocks, Lake-to-Lake Sportsman Series race, plus UMP Street Stocks and PureStox.

Then on Thursday, August 9, the cars and stars from the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series will be in town for Twin 50-lap races. The UMP Street Stocks and PureStox will fill out the program. Both events feature 7 p.m. start times. Canandaigua Speedway is located just east of the Village of Canandaigua on County Road 10.
