Round number three of the F.X. Caprara Car Companies-Dig Safely New York ‘Five-Star’ Series comes to Canandaigua Speedway on July 21 with Budweiser presenting the mini-series created to spotlight the top DIRTcar Big-Block Modified teams in the area.
Sportsman Modifieds, UMP Street Stocks, PureStox and Mod Lites complete the Saturday card on Ugly Truck Night at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, with qualifying race action taking the first green flag at 7 p.m. sharp. Pit gates unlock at 4 p.m. and grandstand gates swing open at 5 p.m.
Big-Block veteran Pat Ward kicked off the fledgling five-race series with a decisive flag-to-flag 35-lap feature win at Can-Am Motorsports Park on June 2 and Alan Johnson followed up with a $2,000 payday at Fulton Speedway on June 30. Cayuga County Fair Speedway is scheduled to host the fourth leg on Sunday, Aug. 19 with the finale saved for Rolling Wheels Raceway Park at a date to be determined.
The 2022 ‘Five-Star’ Series points fund awards the winner $1,000 with the top-10 sharing in the $3,025 total pot. Points are maintained using the traditional DIRTcar NorthEast championship race format figuring in 100 points to win and 40 points to start each featured event. Ward (172) tops current points chart after two shows, followed closely by Danny Johnson (170), Gary Tomkins (163), Vic Coffey (152), Steve Paine (152), Pat O’Brien (134), Dave Rauscher (110), Justin Haers (109), Alan Johnson (100) and Jimmy Phelps (95).
All-time Canandaigua points champion Paine will be the man to beat on home turf as he maintains a commanding lead in search of a DIRT-record eighth straight Big-Block crown at Canandaigua with four feature wins to date. Chuck Bower, Charlie Donk, Derrick Podsiadlo and Russ Hefti lead the ‘Land of Legends’ locals against the 5 Star invaders expected to arrive in full force for the Saturday night showdown.
Paul Guererri continues to hold down the top spot in Canandaigua’s Sportsman Modified class while Mike Welch (UMP/DIRTcar Street Stock) and Marc Minutolo (PureStox) have expanded their leads to more than 50 points in the respective full-fender divisions.
