Lincoln Wins Sportsman Special As Mother Nature Slows Night

Canandaigua, NY – June 30, 2022 – By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua Speedway PR

Loren Lincoln was able to fool Mother Nature and take home the victory in the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature Saturday evening at the Canandaigua Speedway.

“The low side of the speedway had me worried earlier when we were grooming the track,” stated Lincoln in victory lane. “But the second time we came out, after that last rain, the low side seemed to open up some making for a great bite.”

Rain in the Central Finger Lakes region hit the speedway around 6 p.m. and then persisted on-and-off again until nearly 7:30 p.m., when it was decided to try and run the show using a “Features Only” format for the regular weekly classes and let the ASCS Patriot Sprint Car division, run heats and a 25-lap A-Main (results concerning the ASCS Sprint cars can be found elsewhere with Jason Barney taking the win). In order to line up the “Features Only” the handicapping system was used exclusively.

Full-Fender wins went to Mike Welch in the UMP/DIRTcar Street Stock division and Chris Guererri in the PureStox.

The 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman main opened with pole-sitter Scott Schrader jumping into an early lead with David Allen and Tim Currier right on his heels. By lap three Lincoln had also added his name to the pursuer’s list, passing both Currier and Allen to take second.

Lincoln was able to pull along side of Schrader on several occasions, but just did not seem to be able to complete the pass. Finally on lap 21, with just four laps remaining Lincoln set up to make a low side pass on Schrader through turns three and four. This move resulted in him taking the lead. Lap cars then became a factor and it looked as if Lincoln was going to be trapped low exiting the second turn, but the lap car drifted high and blocked Schrader instead.

With just one lap remaining the yellow flew when newcomer Dave Landon, driving the John Robinson number 8LR, made heavy contact with the fourth turn cement wall. This set up a one lap dash to the checkers. Lincoln held on for the victory with Currier, Dan Wiesner, Schrader and Rob Bussey rounding out the top-five finishers.

The 20-lap UMP Ferris Mowers Street Stock feature also almost went green-to-checkers. Up front a battle was on for the lead with Chris Fisher in front. In hot pursuit were Steve Faulkner, LeRoy Lewis, Doug Smith and Adam DePuy.

Faulkner was able to hold Doug Smith back in third until lap 13 when Smith made a move in the third turn to take the position. But just behind Smith was Mike Welch, who, using the high grove, passed both Smith and Fisher to take the lead.

The lone yellow flew on lap 18 when Nathan Peckham, Lewis and Andy Fisk all came together exiting the fourth turn. Fisk and Lewis were done for the night, but Peckham was able to return and ultimately finish tenth.

Welch held on over the final two laps to take the victory. “Chris (Fisher) runs well here at the track,” related Welch. “He’ll have his night here soon. This track was just awesome tonight.”

Chris Guererri led all 12 laps in the green-to-checkered PureStox main. There were times that some of his competitors got both themselves and Chris sideways, but he held on for the win. A huge wreck on the final lap, in the final turn, scrambled the order of the top-five finishers for the night. Rod Comfort Jr., Corey Hunt, Marc Minutolo and Ross Lurcock rounded out the top-five. “Someone got an early shot at me,” stated Guererri. “I was able to push down on the gas and pull away from that danger.”

LEGENDS LEDGER: The Canandaigua “family” wants to extend our deepest sympathies to Jack Christensen’s family. Jack, who at one time helped out with public relations at the track, passed away on Friday, June 29, following a long bout with cancer. He will surely be missed by all….The feature winning drivers are now drawing to see which driver in their class becomes the “Driver of the Week” and receive two free passes into the track the following week. This week Loren Lincoln pulled out Scott Schrader’s name in the Sportsman division and Mike Welch pulled out number one, his own name, for the Street Stock “Driver of the Week”. Next week there will be two PureStox driver’s names pulled to make up for this week’s omission.

Upcoming Saturday July 7, Ferris Mowers presents “America Night” featuring all four main weekly DIRTcar classes; Big-Block Modifieds and Sportsman Modifieds plus UMP Street Stocks and PureStox. Fireworks will top off the evening. Race time starts at 7 p.m. sharp.
