Henderson & Currier Split Sportsman Twin 20s, Smith Street Stock Winner

Canandaigua, NY - June 2, 2022 - By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua Speedway PR

Todd Henderson remains on a roll after winning the first of two 20-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Modified features on the Wall Radio FM night. In Victory Lane Henderson drew to invert a number of cars in the starting field and was given the "Deal-No Deal" option of a $200 bonus for starting at the back of the field. Henderson accepted the challenge.

"The motors are very hot tonight," stated Henderson as high humid skies and warm temperatures had their effect on the 26-car starting field.

In the second 20-lap nightcap, Tim Currier won his first-ever DIRTcar Sportsman feature going away. In both events Geneva's Paul Guererri came home second. As for Henderson's challenge he fell a few cars short of his goal and a $200 bonus, finishing in eighth.

"I thought I was in trouble as I came off turn four on that last lap," related Currier. "I felt my car was best on the bottom of the track, and I drifted somewhat high on that last turn."

In the Ferris Mowers UMP Street Stocks, Blane Smith took home his second set of checkers this season. "The track was excellent tonight," stated Smith. "You have to be patient and along with the number of clean drivers we have around here you can make it to the front of the field."

In PureStox action, 70 year-old Les Excell  also captured his second win of the season. Also on the race card was the second WNYR 98.5 "Crazy Chicks-n-Cars Catfight" race. Ashley Lantz took home her second win of the year in that 6-lap feature.

The DIRTcar Modifieds had the night off to compete in the Five Star inter-track competition as round one was being run at Can-Am Motorsports Park just north of Watertown, N.Y.

The first 20-lap DIRTcar Sportsman main had 26 cars respond to the starter's call. At the drop of Tom Burton's green flag Gary Hotaling jumped into an early lead and was able to stretch his advantage over the first half of the race. On lap 10 the yellow flag flew when Mark Chiddy slowed between turns one and two after losing the left front wheel off his number 54 Sportsman car.

On the restart Hotaling moved away from Canandaigua top runners Todd Henderson and Paul Guererri. However, for Hotaling his luck changed as the caution lights reappeared on lap 14 when Darryl Hilkert spun around in the fourth turn and Kevin Ridley slowed with a broken front suspension. This time Henderson was able to get by Hotaling for the lead and one lap later Guererri also passed Hotaling for the runner-up position.

One last yellow flew on lap 18 when Loren Lincoln and Clay Parmelee came together on the front stretch and spun. Both cars returned to the race at the back of the field. On the restart Eric Giguere passed Hotaling for third and the results remained Henderson, Guererri, Giguere, Hotaling and Jim Hull at the line.

In victory lane Henderson pulled the number 12 to invert the top-12 starters. He was then offered by General Manager Jack Deery the option of going to the rear and a possible $100 addition to his pay in the second race if he could win again. Henderson turned down that offer. "The banker" then offered a $200 bonus for starting last and winning the second feature. Henderson accepted that offer.

The second 20-lap feature rolled out with Darryl Ruggles and Jipp Ortiz in the front row. This time only 22 of the 26 cars could answer the call. Ruggles led the opening two laps before the yellow flew as John Robinson flew off the third turn and into the grass.

On the restart Ortiz took the lead and was challenged by young Currier who used the low side of the speedway to inch by Ortiz after four side-by-side racing laps. On lap eight Currier was able to claim the lead and begin to pull away from Ortiz. Again a late race yellow on lap 18 bunched the field together for another green-white-checkered flag finish. This time Jeremy Pitcher slowed on the front stretch to force out the final yellow.

Currier held on for the victory while Guererri inched by Ortiz on the final lap to take his second runner-up finish of the evening. Eric Giguere and Ruggles rounded out the top-five finishers.

The 20-lap UMP Street Stock main opened with Chris Fisher and Andy Fisk racing side-by-side for the lead of the race. Side-by-side racing is what the Street Stocks are all about. On one occasion (lap 8) they even came down the front straightaway four-wide and racing into the first turn.

Blane Smith worked his way into the battle for the lead by lap seven. He passed Fisher for the lead one lap later as the battle for second was four-wide. The yellow flew on lap 14 when Chris Jacobs and Karl Wilkins came together in the third turn. One of them had been trying to turn into the third turn pits and the other made heavy contact sending them both off and into the pits side grass.

Smith held off a late race attempt by Fisk to take the lead. Fisk finished second followed by last week's feature winner, Mike Welch, Phil Marsden and Doug Smith.

In the 'Land of Legends' PureStox finale, Corey Hunt led the first nine and a half laps, only to be passed by Les Excell down the backstretch on the final circuit. Excell took the victory with Hunt second. Hunt also had to hold off a late charge by Marc Minutolo whose efforts fell just short but still earned him third. Ryan DePuy and George LaVare Jr. rounded out the front-five.

LOL LEDGER: Sportsman teams were proud to be featured on the evening, putting on a solid show for their fans who gained admission with a special $20 car load rate. Their bigger brothers were missed some as the Modifieds usually blow off the lose "marbles" around the speedway and without this the track was some what tricky during the heat races ... Canandaigua's turn at the DIRTcar Modified Five Star race comes on Saturday, July 21.

The DIRTcar Modified return to action this Saturday along with a complete show of DIRTcar Sportsman, UMP Street Stocks and PureStox. Race time on Saturday will be 7 p.m. sharp. Canandaigua Speedway is located at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, County Road 10, just east of the village of Canandaigua.
