Hurricane Season Again, Guererri Makes It Double Sevens At Canandaigua

Canandaigua, NY - May 19, 2022 - By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua Speedway PR

Steve "the Hurricane" Paine made it two wins in a row as he won the DIRtcar Big-Block Modified main Saturday on Ontario Agricultural Society Nite at Canandaigua Speedway driving his yellow-bird number 7x Troyer. "I hated to see that last yellow," stated Paine, "as I knew Vic (Coffey) was going to be right there on my rear. We just got a great restart and cruised home."

Another number seven returned to victory lane as Paul Guererri averaged 87.318 mph as he went green-to-checkers in the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature. In full-fender action it was Les Excell winning the PureStox 10-lapper and Phil Marsden capturing one of the most exciting Ferris Mowers UMP Street Stock features ever run at the "Land of Legends."

The first of three yellow flags in the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature flew on the initial circuit when Greg Monica looped around in the fourth turn. Up front it was Derrick Podsiadlo in the lead followed by Steve Paine, who had started in tenth and took the lead from Podsiadlo in just three laps. Paine then proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field.

For the race fans a great battle was being waged for second on back. Podsiadlo found himself in a real battle with Chuck Bower, Charlie Donk, Vic Coffey and Gary Tomkins. Coffey seemed to handle the best and moved into second on lap 18. Just then, Mike Johnson spun on the front chute to bring out the yellow. Paine, who had built up six second lead now found Coffey on his rear bumper.

On the restart Paine was able to pull away again, this time from Coffey. Bower settled into third with Donk a more distant fourth. On lap 31 the yellow lights flashed again when Eldon Payne flew off the track in the third turn. This set up a four lap dash to the checkers which Paine easily won. Coffey came home in second followed by Bower. Tomkins just nipped Donk at the finish line by a mere .020 seconds to take fourth. "This car was real good tonight," stated Paine. "Once out front I had to get my rhythm and just ride."

The 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman main would last just eight minutes as the 22 starters put on a great race. Bill Coleman was the early leader with Eric VanSkiver running in second. Paul Guererri was running in fourth and making the move to jump ahead. On lap seven he passed VanSkiver into third behind Coleman and Daryl Hilkert. By lap 11, Guererri was in second and running down Coleman. He made his pass on lap 12 and started to pull away from the rest of the pack. In just five laps Guererri held nearly a full straightaway advantage over Coleman.

At the wire it was Guererri followed by points leader Todd Henderson, Hilkert, last week's winner Dan Wiesner and Loren Lincoln, Guererri picked up an additional $100 crate motor bonus, bringing his winning total to $500.

The only words that can be used are "Great Race" to describe the 15-lap UMP Street Stock finale. At times the cars were four wide, all charging for the lead. Chris Fisher took the early advantage as Mike Schultz, Steve Faulkner and Scott Smith were all after him. It seemed that Phil Marsden found the high line to his liking as he moved into second on lap five.

Three laps later Marsden moved high and found an opening to pass Fisher for the lead. Once by, Fisher found himself in the middle of a wild battle as he dropped back to fourth by lap 10. On that lap the yellow flew when Steve Faulkner's hood blew off, flying high in the air down the back stretch.

On the ensuing restart Marsden almost blew his lead as he and second-place Schultz touched going down the front chute. Marsden held on following the contact and charged into the first turn in the lead again. Marsden held on for the victory followed by Scott Smith, Frank Burnell, Andy Fisk and Mike Schultz. "All I was thinking about up front on those last few laps was don't spin out and don't get hit," informed Marsden in victory lane. When asked about the great race he responded," This is just a normal night here."

The 10-lap PureStox feature opened with a number of competitors not making it out onto the track. Up front Les Excell led the entire race with Marc Minutolo finishing in second. "It's been a while for me," stated Excel, who raced for many years awhile back at Canandaigua. "My son helps me out the most getting this car ready and providing the towing, too."

Coming up Saturday, May 26 will be New York Army/National Guard Night at Canandaigua with a gigantic fireworks extravaganza closing out the special holidat card. On the track the DIRTcar Modifieds and Sportsman Modifieds will be joined by the UMP Street Stock and PureStox divisions. Canandaigua Speedway is located just east of the village of Canandaigua at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, just off County Road 10. Race time starts at 7 p.m.

LEGEND LEDGER: Paul Szmal was back behind the microphone joining Greg Birosh in announcing the race. Paul has left the Cincinnati, OH region and will be hosting a radio show in Utica, NY..A good crowd was on hand for the races despite all of the television racing scheduled for the night. Adding to this the races ended by 9:16 p.m., a new early record for the track. This allowed many fans to make it home to watch the television event.
