Haers Bags 1st Big-Block Mod Win As Canandaigua Speedway Goes Green Canandaigua, NY - April 21, 2022 - By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua Speedway PR Justin Haers held off reigning DIRTcar Big-Block Modified track points king Steve Paine for the final 10 circuits to win the 2022 Hoosier Tire season-opener at Canandaigua Speedway on Saturday evening. In DIRTcar Sportsman racing it was defending division champion Todd Henderson powering his crate Chevrolet to the 25-lap feature win. Henderson picked up a $100 bonus as the first crate engine over the finish line to bump up his winnings to $500. Andy Fisk came home the winner in the 15-lap DIRTcar/UMP Street Stock main. He can lay claim to winning the first feature run under UMP sanction at the half mile oval. Ryan DePuy won the 10-lap PureStox main. "The track was relatively smooth for early Spring conditions," related Haers, "especially when you consider just how wet this Spring has been." The 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature began with Derrick Podsiadlo and Vic Coffey pacing the field of 21 starters down to take the green flag. Coffey was able to lead the first lap but gave it up to Haers just before the yellow flew as Mike Johnson spun off the third turn. On the restart Haers led Coffey with last year's track champion Steve Paine in third. On lap eight the yellow flew as Coffey spun between the third and fourth turns. He restarted at the rear of the field and this moved Gary Tomkins, who cleared the Coffey miscue, to take over second. Haers held an early advantage over Tomkins, Paine, Chuck Bower and Charlie Donk yet the top-five was about to be shaken up again. On lap 15 Donk slowed with a flat tire. It was also found that he had broken a left rear tube and shock. The fourth yellow came on lap 21 when north country Small-Block invader Billy Cook and Big-Block rookie Paul Habeck came together in between the first and second turns, resulting in both cars spinning out. On the restart, Paine got back by Tomkins for second and started to pressure Haers for the lead. Ron Cartwright Jr. brought out the next yellow on lap 28 when he spun in the second turn while running seventh. On the ensuing restart Paine pushed Haers for the lead yet 'T-Bone' never flinched . As the cars completed the 30th circuit Tomkins blew an engine while going down the front chute sending the cars running fourth on back into a mad scramble. Amazingly, it was Coffey, who had come from the rear after spinning out on lap eight, who emerged as the new third-place runner with still a handful of laps to go. Over the last five laps Haers held off Paine yet on the final circuit Paine made a desperate challenge at Haers before falling a car-length short at the finish line. Haers claimed his first-ever Canandaigua DIRTcar Modified feature victory followed by Paine, Danny Johnson, Coffey and Chuck Bower. In the Sportsman finale outside pole-sitter Henderson grabbed the lead at the drop of the initial green. On lap four the first of five yellow flags flew when newcomer Bill Coleman exited the turn one banking. The second yellow came on lap nine when past champion Paul Guererri slowed on the back stretch with a flat tire. It was on this restart that Scott Schrader was able to pass Henderson for the lead. On lap 14 third-place runner Dan Wiesner looped his mount to the inside of the second turn. This set up a six-lap green flag run before the yellow flew for the fourth time on lap 21. This time it was for leader Schrader who had slowed coming down the front straight with mechanical woes which allowed Henderson to retake the top position. With just one lap remaining the yellow flew for the final time when Wiesner slowed between the third and fourth turns with a flat tire. The one lap dash to the finish ended with Henderson steering his crate motor-powered mount to victory followed by Eric Giguere, Loren Lincoln, David Allen and Tim Currier. In the UMP Street Stock feature the yellow lights flashed only one time on lap 10 after Mike Schultz came to a stop on the backstretch. As for the racing, it was Fisk parlaying his outside-pole starting position into leading all 15 laps. Blane Smith made a late race charge at the lead but could not complete the pass on Fisk. Smith finished second followed by Tiger Chapman, Doug Smith and last years divisional champion Mike Welch in fifth. The 10-lap PureStox feature went green-to-checkers with DePuy picking up his first victory at the Ontario County Fairgrounds. At the end of the race Chris Guererri flipped his new CJ1 in the first turn, which resulted in the worst accident of the event.
