Paine Picks Up Modified Win Number Two At ‘Land Of Legends’ In 2006

Canandaigua, NY – May 13, 2006 – By Gary M. Spaid, Canandaigua PR

It may have been raining at other speedways on Saturday night but it was as if a “hurricane” blew through the Ontario County Fairgrounds bringing Steve Paine from Waterloo, NY into victory lane for the second time in 2006. Paine made it look easy, taking the lead on a lap 12 restart and going unchallenged into Canandaigua Speedway’s victory lane some 23 laps later in the DIRT Modified main.

In DIRT Sportsman action, a huge 13-car pile up may have blocked the speedway for a period of time, but it was not enough to prevent Phil LaVare from taking the 25-lap victory. In accompanying Street Stock action, Rob Ingerham took top honors in the 10-lap Novice main while Adam DePuy won the Expert 15-lap feature.

The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature opened with rookie Chad Homan and Derrick Podsiadlo pacing the field down to the green. Podsiadlo took the lead with Homan dropping back into a battle for second with Chuck Bower, who made his move for second on lap six and took off after Podsiadlo. But his charge forward was thwarted by a yellow flag on lap eight when Phil Vigneri looped his number 44v machine in the second turn. Vic Coffey was able to take third just before that yellow flag flew.

Bower was able to get by Podsiadlo on the restart with Coffey in tow, pushing Podsiadlo back to third. Charging through the field was Steve Paine, passing both high and low. On lap 11, Paine moved to the outside in the fourth turn to pass Bower for the lead. Moments later Randy Chrysler coasted to a stop in the fourth turn to bring out the second yellow of the race.

Paine managed to lead the remainder of the laps, building an impressive lead over Bower and Vic Coffey. On lap 22 the final yellow flew when Todd Burley slowed in the first turn with a flat tire. On the restart, Paine held an advantage over Coffey, Bower, Jeff Brownell Jr. and Gary Tomkins. On lap 31 it looked like the yellow might have to fly again when Chad Brachmann suffered a flat left rear tire while running seventh. Brachmann was able to clear his car and allow the race to continue.

On the final lap Coffey slowed on the third turn with a flat, but as the white flag had already been displayed the race would be completed. Coffey slowed but realized the race was going to finish and limped home a lap down to the rest of the field. Paine took the win followed by Bower, Brownell Jr., Tomkins and Matt Sheppard.

The DIRT Sportsman main began with Jim Hull doing a very respectable job leading the feature from the drop of the green. On lap seven the yellow flew when Rob Bussey slowed on the back stretch. This set up a restart that saw a car get into the back of third place Eric Giguere. This hit was enough to send him sideways towards the inside concrete wall. Cars just kept piling in, resulting in Nick Guererri rolling over. When the dust had settled 13 cars were involved and the red flag was out due to the completely blocked track.

The next attempt at a restart was much better. Hull maintained his lead over Rob Richmond Jr. and Phil LaVare. One lap later the yellow was out again as Danielle Culverwall slid off the track in the first turn. A small fire erupted under the hood but was quickly extinguished by the DIRT Safety Crew.

On lap 12, LaVare got into the back of Hull, resulting in Hull getting very loose and almost spinning out. Hull was able to gather his car up and maintain his lead. But one lap later LaVare took to the outside lane and completed his pass for the lead.

One additional yellow flew when Dan Wiesner spun in the second turn and collected Todd Henderson and Scott Just. Both Just and Henderson were able to continue in the race. LaVare brought his car home to victory lane followed by Just, Rob Pratt, Eric Giguere and Bussey. “This one is for Troy (Griffin),” stated LaVare from victory lane. “This track was the best it has ever been. I have been racing since I was 15 years old and this was the hardest victory I ever earned.”

A sufficient number of Novice cars were on hand to warrant a separate feature. Rob Ingerham led all 10 laps. Only one yellow flew during the race. That came on lap seven, when Ted Sweeney looped his car in the second turn.

The 15-lap Expert main experienced a lot of excitement when Frank Burnell’s car started to show a fire under the hood. Frank was without his Raceiver Radio and did not understand why he was constantly being black flagged. Finally he pulled off the track. Up front it had been Nick Dandino leading from the drop of the green. Dandino held a ten car advantage over Adam DePuy. Then with just two laps remaining Dandino’s car went up in smoke coming down the front stretch. This allowed DePuy to take the lead and the win. Following DePuy across the finish line were Mike Welch, Scott Smith, Blane Smith and Mike Rasbeck

LEGEND NOTES: Phil LaVare’s luck continued after his victory. He drew his own name out of the hat to receive the Team of the Week Award and three free pit passes to the next regular night (June 3)….Casey Wagner won the Team of the Week Award for the Street Stock division…A number of tracks in the area were rained out, resulting in a number of new faces at the track.

Then in two weeks, May 27, it will be the Taney Memorial at Canandaigua honoring many members of the Taney family who participated and officiated at Canandaigua over the years. Highlighting that event will be a 50-lap DIRT Modified feature. Race time for all of these events begins at 7 p.m. sharp.
