Taney Memorial To Tomkins; Hefti & Lincoln Cop Twin Sportsman Mains CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 28) – The full night of racing was topped by the running of the 50-lap Taney Memorial, honoring the local Taney family. Denis Taney lost his life in 1980 at Canandaigua Speedway. Fred Taney was a track official who passed away a number of years as was Kelly Taney, who died suddenly at a very young age. The 50-lap Taney Memorial was won by Gary Tomkins, driving his own number 84 DIRT Modified. In other racing Russ Hefti, won the rain-delayed Paine Motorsports Sportsman feature from May 21. That race was picked up on lap 10 of 25. He was leading the race when the rains hit back on the 14th. Loren Lincoln won the regular 25-lap Sportsman main. In full-fender action it looked as if Adam DePuy was easily going to win the Parts Plus Auto Stores Street Stock 15-lapper when he blew up allowing Nick Dandino to pull into victory lane. Chad Homan returned to victory lane in the 15-lap Big Mike's Auto Repair Pro Stock feature. Also on hand were the Bobcat of Buffalo Patriot Sprints with George Suprick taking the action filled 20-lap A-Main. More about this latter event can be found elsewhere. Nine yellows slowed the pace of the 50-lap DIRT Modified Taney Memorial. Todd Henderson, the outside pole-sitter, took the early lead as he battled Jeff Brownell Jr., who looked exceptionally strong. Brownell took command of the lead on the second lap as he and Henderson stretched out their advantage over Mike Bliss and Mike Ward. On lap eight Brownell had built up a two second lead over Henderson when the yellow flew for Vic Coffey who had spun out low in the third turn with a flat tire. Coffey then pitted for a new tire and returned at the back of the field. After just two more circuits the yellow was out again when Eldon Payne Jr. looped his car in the first turn. During this yellow Stewart Friesen, Mike Bliss and Payne Jr. all pitted. Justin Haers took advantage of the tightened up pack and took the lead from Brownell. Two more yellows followed when Bliss and Coffey again stopped on the track. When the race resumed on lap 15 it was Haers in the lead followed by Chuck Bower, Brownell, Steve Paine, Charlie Donk and Gary Tomkins. Brownell re-took second and tried to chase down Haers but it would be the yellow flag that would tighten up the field again. On lap 18, Scott Boudinot had his front axle break, collapsing the right font wheel assembly. He guided his car into the front stretch infield grass, but track officials wanted to make sure he was all right and threw the yellow. On lap 20 Shannon Whaley looped in the first turn to bring out yet another yellow. Haers maintained his lead with Brownell in second and battling with Steve Paine to hold that position. Gary Tomkins was now moving and passing cars on the high side of the speedway. Brownell drifted high in between three and four and dropped back to third as Tomkins ducked under for the position. On lap 25 the yellow flew for Mike Ward who came to a stop near the pit exit in the fourth turn. Haers now had Tomkins on his tail end followed by Brownell and Paine. Brownell lost a number of positions when he again drifted extremely high between turns three and four. Tomkins began to try the outside pass exiting the second turn, finally completing the move on lap 31 for the lead. Once out front Tomkins began to stretch his lead. Haers had his hands full with Paine, Donk and Chad Brachmann. Donk was the final winner of this challenge, passing both Paine and Haers for second on lap 43. Donk looked to be the fastest car on the track but Tomkins held a full three second lead by this time. With the white flag in the air, Brownell coasted to a stop at the top of the first turn forcing starter Dave Farney to throw the yellow. This would set up a one lap dash to the checkers, but not before the yellow flew one last time on the restart when Whaley spun in the third turn. Tomkins won this one lap dash with Donk finishing second followed by Haers Brachmann and Paine. Russ Hefti maintained his lead as the rain-delayed 25-lap Sportsman main from May 21 took the green flag to complete lap 10. Contact between Loren Lincoln and Gus Hurlburt caused the yellow to fly. A second yellow followed on the next circuit when Scott Schrader spun, also in the fourth turn. Finally, once the green stayed out, Hefti began to build his lead to five seconds, a full straight away, over Paul Guererri, Dan Wiesner and Lincoln. The yellow flew for the final time on lap 21 when Schrader coasted to a stop in the second turn. At the checkers it was Hefti with the win followed by Guererri, Wiesner, Lincoln and Murphy. The Paine Motorsports Sportsman nightcap had Justin Henderson take the lead with Murphy in second followed by pole sitter Mike Johnson and Kevin Ridley. The yellow flew on lap five when Guererri made contact with the rear of Ricky VanNeil, sending him spinning down the front straight. Also involved was Gus Hurlburt. The restart saw a four wide dash for position with Lincoln taking over the lead. Lincoln stretched out his lead with Henderson in second followed by Guererri and Wiesner. With just four laps remaining Guererri pulled an outside pass on Henderson to take second. The yellow had to come out again near the end of the race. On lap 22, Eric Giguere slowed on the track and Henderson spun in the first turn. With the white out Scott Schrader slowed in the second turn and the yellow flew. The one lap dash had Guererri try for the lead but Lincoln came home the winner. Wiesner, Johnson and Hurlburt completed the front five. In full-fender action Daryl Hilkert was the early leader in the 15-lap Pro Stock main. Chad Homan caught Hilkert and completed his pass for the lead on lap 10. Hilkert tried to maintain the pace but began to fall back and into a battle for second with defending track champion Jipp Ortiz. With just one lap remaining, Brian Thompson spun in the first turn to set up a one lap dash to the finish. Homan brought the field down to the checkers followed by Hilkert, Ortiz, James Henry and Frank Guererri Jr.. The 15-lap Street Stock feature had Adam DePuy take the lead and never look back. It looked like DePuy had the field covered as exciting side-by-side battles ensued for positions two through ten. So tight were the battles that at the start-finish line the field came across three wide at times. A triple spin by Mike Welch, Mike Schultz and Blane Smith in the third turn forced the first yellow to fly on lap eight. As the field restarted, DePuy’s car showed signs of smoke from under the car. A great plume of smoke then emerged as he went down the back stretch and into the pits. This left Nick Dandino in the lead and he raced to the checkers ahead of Nick Rizzo, Steve Faulkner, Mike Minutolo and Frank Burnell rounding out the top-five. This Saturday will feature double Modified main events as the rained out 35-lapper from May 21 goes to the starting grid as the first race of the evening.
