Rain Halts Canandaigua Speedway Action On Chrysler-Dodge Night; CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 21) – Rain, rain go away…should be the motto at Canandaigua Speedway as rain has effected racing in four of the five nights to date this year. Last Saturday the wet stuff held off long enough for the full-fender divisions to record their feature runs. Darryl Hilkert nursed a smoking engine home to take the Pro Stock win yet it was overturned in tech due to illegal fuel. This handed the win over to second-place finisher James Henry. In the Street Stocks it was Leroy Lewis taking the 15-lap victory. The Paine Motorsports Sportsman 25-lap feature was on the track and under the yellow flag for an accident when the rain came. Josh Hefti had the front end on his car collapse and was sent sailing off the first turn. During this yellow the rains began to fall in earnest. This race will be picked up on lap 10 Saturday, May 28, with just 16 laps remaining in the event. The rained-out Advance Auto Parts-Original Pizza Logs Modified/358-Modified main was lined up and ready to go. It will have to be run on Saturday, June 4, as this coming week the Patriot Sprint Cars along with the 50-lap Denis Taney Memorial for the DIRT Modifieds will be run, making for a longer then normal program. “We should not have any trouble getting our entire program in this Saturday,” commented general manager Jeff Farney. “But if I was a fan I would make sure I was in the stands and ready to go by at least 6:45 p.m.. I expect we will have to start the rain-delayed Sportsman main slightly before 7 p.m.” As for the races that did run, Darryl Hilkert took the lead at the drop of the green to start the 20-lap Big Mike's Auto Repair Pro Stock main. After just one circuit signs of smoke appeared at the back of his car. James Henry then closed the gap over the next eighteen laps. After two very solid attempts at taking the lead Henry settled in for second. The top-five before tech were Hilkert, Henry, Chad Homan, Jipp Ortiz and Frank Guererri Jr.. Following tech the top five were Henry, Guererri Jr., Matt Grubbe, John Rutkowski and Hilkert. Caution flags flew early and often in the Parts Plus Auto Stores Street Stock finale. Mike Schultz coasted to a stop on the first lap in the third turn and one lap later the yellow reappeared when Adam DePuy came to a stop in the second turn. On the restart yet another yellow was displayed as Mike Minutolo looped on the front stretch after Scott Smith and Mike Welch made contact. The race finally got underway with Leroy Lewis in front of Nick Dandino with Dandino making several attempts at taking the lead, yet each falling short. This duo pull away from the field and as they were lapping the new car of Chris Gingrich, contact was made with one of the leaders and Gingrich looped his car. Lewis led Dandino to the checkers followed by Nick Rizzo, Nate Peckham and Mike Welch. Russ Hefti charge into the lead from his third place starting spot to begin the Sportsman main. He had opened up a five-second advantage over Rob Bussey when the yellow flew for Russ's son, Josh who had the front end on his car collapse. The younger Hefti could not steer the car and it went sailing off the first turn. The rains the began and started to intensify soonafter forcing the rest of the four-star program to be re-scheduled as outlined earlier. Racing this Saturday will include the Patriot Sprints and DIRT Modifieds, double Sportsman features plus Pro Stocks and Street Stocks. It will be a full program that must start as close to 7 p.m. as possible. Don’t miss out on a full night of racing action at Canandaugua Speedway.
