Paine Picks Up $2,000 Victory In Ontario County Fair Championship CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (July 30) – Steve Paine, from nearby Waterloo, NY, picked up his second ever Ontario County Fair Championship last Saturday evening, having won his first back in 1989. Paine earned $2,000 for his title win. In Sportsman action, Scott Schrader earned his third 25-lap feature win of the season at the “Land of Legends.” Daryl Hilkert scored his first Pro stock victory of the season and the same could be said of Nate Peckham after posting his initial 15-lap Street Stock feature win of the '05 campaign. Also on hand were the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club racers running a combined 12-lap main event. Ally Amell (70’s) took the win followed in second by Pat Sonnenberg (60’s) while Gordie Wood came home in fourth to earn the 50's title. The 35-lap DIRT Modified main started off with members of the Geneva National Guard calling out “Gentlemen start your engines.” With a roar from the large crowd on hand, the 26 big-block starters fired and took to the task of winning the 162nd Ontario County Fair Championship. Ron Cartwright Jr. took command of the lead early in the race steering his 358-Modified. A number of 358’s were on hand as a Syracuse spot for the first small-block to finish was also on the line. Ray Bliss ran second and held Chuck Bower at bay until lap six when Bower out-dragged Bliss for the runner-up slot. One lap later Cartwright drifted high in the first turn allowing Bower take the lead. Bower then pulled away to a full two-second advantage over Bliss before the first yellow flew on lap 15. Eldon Payne Jr. had slowed going into the first turn with a flat tire to cause the caution. On the restart, multi-time feature winner Gary Tomkins entered the picture diving low to pass Bliss for second then quickly catching Bower as the two diced it out back-and-forth for the lead. Tomkins finally secured the point on lap 23 only to have Bower take it back again on the very next circuit. Coming on strong also was Steve Paine, who took third and in a daring maneuver, drove low in the third turn as Tomkins took to the high side, both trying to split Bower for the lead. Paine’s move proved better as he succeeded and took over the lead on lap 25. Points leader Paine went on to score his third victory of the season followed by Bower, Tomkins, Chad Brachmann and Charlie Donk. The average speed of the race was 75.265 mph. The first Original Pizza Logs 358-Modified to cross the line was 10th-place finisher Randy Chrysler, Canandaigua's 2002 Sportsman division champion. Chrysler now has a guaranteed starting spot in the Sunoco/Aplus 150 at Syracuse during Super DIRT Week XXXIV, October 8. The 25-lap Paine Motorsports Sportsman main opened with Mike Johnson taking the lead at the drop of the green. RC Dash winner Steve Doell ran second until lap five when he ducked into the pits. Doell would have earned an extra $75 if he had been able to win the feature, along with the RC dash, compliments of RC Racing. Doell forfeited this opportunity with his pit stop, which lasted three laps, before he could return to the race. Schrader made an impressive move using the high grove through turns three and four on lap five. He went from fourth to first with this maneuver, then began to build a lead over Kevin Ridley, Johnson and Loren Lincoln. The only yellow flag of the race flew on lap 13 when Johnson coasted to a stop on the front stretch with a flat tire. Back under green, Schrader rebuilt his lead over new second-place runner Dan Wiesner. By lap 16, the margin was two seconds and by lap 22 Schrader had stretched his lead to a full three seconds as Ridley began to challenge Wiesner for second. At the finish line it was Schrader with the win followed by Ridley, Wiesner, Lincoln and Justin Henderson. Schrader’s win makes him the winningest Sportsman driver at the speedway this season. Point’s leader Paul Guererri suffered early night woes with his number 7 and was forced to borrow the number 00 from Frank Wadsworth and try to remain as the track's points leader. Schrader averaged 61.745 mph on his way to victory. The Midstate Vintage race brought back memories from the past when coupes and coaches ruled the speedways of the Northeast. Mike McLaughlin held the lead for much of the first half of the 12-lap main event. A yellow on lap seven allowed Ally Amell to move into position to challenge McLaughlin for the lead. Joining in the run for the lead was Gary Byerly. Finally on lap nine, Amell, in his 70’s coach, took the lead and began to pull away from the rest of the field. A torrid battle for second was then underway between Byerly, John Flach and McLaughlin. These three sailed around the speedway for the final lap, only to get mixed up exiting the fourth turn. The group then found themselves in the cement wall at the exit of the fourth turn. This allowed Paul Sonnenberg, piloting the first 60’s car across the finish line, to pull into second. Daryl Bray came home in third followed in fourth by the first 50’s machine of Gordie Wood. When asked in victory lane how long Wood has been racing he replied, “I started this in 1957, I’ll be 70 this year.” Wood has six decades of short track racing experience. The 15-lap Big Mike's Auto Repair Pro Stock finale started off with Daryl Hilkert overtaking Matt Grubbe for the lead on lap two. Hilkert then took off and built a solid lead that Jipp Ortiz could only scratch away at in the latter stages of the race. Ortiz took second from Grubbe going from fourth to second on lap three using the low grove down the backstretch. Ortiz could not close sufficiently and basically ran out of time. Hilkert took the win with Ortiz finishing over a second back in the runner-up position. Points leader Chad Homan, James Henry and John Rutkowski rounded out the top-five. The race went green-to-checkers and averaged 82.757 mph, proving to be the fastest feature of the evening. Adam DePuy started on the pole in the 15-lap Parts Plus Auto Stores Street Stock finale and he immediately drove into the lead to no surprise for anyone. DePuy then held off Chris Sealy, Scott Smith and Peckham for just two laps before the first yellow of the race flew. Jim Burba, Mike Rasbeck, Mike Minutolo, Steve Faulkner and Scott Smith were all involved in a turn one melee that began following contact on the main straight. DePuy was able to retain the lead on the restart with Peckham dogging him. On lap four the yellow flew again when Frank Burnell slowed on the track, allowing Peckham to once again close in on DePuy. The final yellow came on lap seven when last week’s feature winner, Blane Smith, slowed in the second turn with a flat tire. DePuy made no effort to turn the wheel and took his car directly into the pits off the third turn on lap 10. Peckham inherited his first lead of the race, then held off Nick Rizzo, Mike Welch, Minutolo and Mike Schultz to round out the top-five.
