James And Burnell Capture Full-Fender Finales At Canandaigua; CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (August 20) – As if on cue, the rains began to fall just as the Sportsman cars were reporting to the track for their 25-lap Canandaigua Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep feature. The rains intensified to the point where the surface became too slick and the cars were sent to the pits. Double Sportsman and Modified features will headline the race card at Canandaigua Speedway on Saturday, August 27, with the starting time moved up to 6:45 p.m. to accommodate the big show. The two full-fender divisions were able to complete their entire programs. James Henry picked up the Pro Stock 15-lap feature win while Frank Burnell topped the 15-lap DIRT Street Stock main. It was Burnell’s second win of the season at Canandaigua and Henry’s third triumph at the Ontario County Fairgrounds in 2005. The 15-lap Big Mike's Auto Repair Pro Stock main proved extremely exciting as three cars battled at the front of the field and the results were only determined exiting the final turn on the final lap. Henry took the lead at the drop of the green, but he was being hounded by Chad Homan, Doug Smith and Jipp Ortiz. On lap six, Ortiz took to the high groove and Homan ducked low. Three-wide proved just too much, especially for Ortiz, who dropped a wheel over the embankment and fell back to fourth. Up front Henry held on to the lead yet two laps later Homan, in a side-by-side drag race, inched out the lead at the line. Henry fought back and regained the front spot before the next lap could go into the record book. Joe Stefanski, driving Ortiz’s backup car, was now in third. Henry, Homan and Stefanski all started to pull away from the rest of the field. As these three exited the fourth turn on lap 15, it was Henry taking the win by .4 seconds over Homan followed by Stefanski, Ortiz and Smith. The fast track conditions allowed Henry to average 82.425 mph for this event. “We had a new Campbell motor in the car tonight,” commented a relaxed Henry in victory lane. “Thanks to Jipp (Ortiz) for helping us warm the car up.” In Parts Plus Auto Stores Street Stock action, Frank Burnell took the lead but the rains began to fall and the race was yellow flagged after just one lap. Following a number of slow circuits, the rain drops subsided and the race resumed. Burnell remained the leader with Mike Minutolo second and Blane Smith third. On lap five the yellow flew when Adam DePuy slowed to a stop high in the second turn with an apparent flat tire. On the restart Burnell maintained the lead while Leroy Lewis took over second, Smith remained third and Minutolo dropped back to fourth. On lap 13 the yellow flew again when Randy Peters’ car let go with a huge plume of smoke that blinded most cars behind him. This final slowdown set up a two-lap dash to the checkers. At the finish line it was Burnell taking the win ahead of runner-up Lewis, Smith, Minutolo and Wayne Ellison. A number of accidents marred the heat races. In the second Street Stock qualifier Steve Faulkner and Tony Pangrazio came together on the front straight resulting in both cars contacting the concrete wall. In the second Modified heat Derrick Podsiadlo went for a ride when he hopped the front wheel of the Chad Brachmann machine. Podsiadlo took quite a jolt and hit the fourth turn wall head on. He suffered a painful shoulder injury and his car was damaged badly. On Saturday, Aug. 27 double features in the DIRT Sportsman and Modified divisions will highlight the final show of the month. These held over features will start the night’s racing program followed by a complete four star racing card featuring Street Stocks, Pro Stocks, Sportsman and Modifieds.
