RAIN DELAYED FEATURES RUN THEN THE HEAVENS LET LOSE AGAIN!! CANANDAIGUA, NY...It would seem we better build an ark as the rains fell for the fourth straight week at Canandaigua Speedway, but not before the rain delayed modified and street stock features from May 1 could be run. Vic Coffey remains undefeated in the DIRT Modifieds earning his second win in as many races. Adam Depuy won the 15-lap Street Stock main. Ron Cartwright Jr. blasted away from the pole at the start of the rain delayed 35-lap DIRT Modified feature. He was able to lead Chuck Graham and Darryl Ruggles, until lap four, when he looped his car in the inside of the second turn. This handed over the lead of the race to Charlie Donk, who was able to get around the spinning Cartwright without slowing. Graham was not a lucky as he slowed and fell back into the field. The restart saw the yellow fly again when Tim McCreadie looped into the infield grass off the front stretch. On the move was third place runner Justin Haers. Haers settled into second behind Donk as the yellow flew for the third time when Ruggles slowed between the first and second turns. Donk was now able to stretch out an advantage over Haers and Chad Brachmann in third. Again bad luck hit one of the leaders as Haers's car began to smoke and on lap 19 slowed in the second turn. At this same time Coffey used the opportunity to duck under both Haers and Donk for the lead. This bunched the field together with Vic Coffey leading followed by Donk, Brachmann, Randy Chrysler and Steve Paine. Coffey now powered away from the rest of the field to eventually nearly a three second lead at the finish. On lap 25, Brachmann pulled to the outside of Donk in the fourth turn and took second coming down the main straight. Top runner Ron Smoker was now showing signs of smoke, but remained on the charge until lap 30 when he pulled off the speedway surface. At the checkers it was Coffey with the win followed by Brachmann, Donk, Paine and Chrysler. Chrysler was the first 358- modified across the line and earned the bonus. The 15-lap Street Stock feature saw Darren Phippen take the lead at the drop of the green from the outside pole. On lap six Adam Depuy pulled high in the third turn to pass Phippen for the lead. Also passing Phippen was Rocco Conte's 717 Jr. machine. Amazingly, with 31 starters, the first yellow came on lap nine, when Mike Rasbeck went off the first turn. The only other yellow came on lap 13 when Corey Hunt's engine went up in a billowing cloud of smoke on the back stretch. Depuy was able to pull out to nearly a seven car lead at the checkers over Conte. Frank Burnell, Leroy Lewis and Blane Smith rounded out the top five finishers. The regular program for the evening then got started. Two Pro-Stock heats were run with Chad Homan and Daryl Hilkert taking the wins. Two of the three sportsman heats were also run before the rains fell. David Allen and Gus Hurlburt took the victories. The heavens let lose just as the checkers fell over Hurlburt. The third heat was brought to the track in thoughts that maybe they could run the track in if it was just a passing shower. But the rains were too intense. Officials waited for nearly thirty minutes before having to throw in the towel due to heavy rain and dangerous lightning. The rest of the regular night program was completely cancelled and will not be made up. CANANDAIGUA CHATTER: Thirty-three modifieds were on hand for the night of racing. Seven new arrivals were added to the back of the rain delayed modified consolation event from May 1...Gary Tomkins piloted the "Kid's Fun Bus" and Frito Lay handed out free bags of potato chips to the children...This Saturday the Sportsman car move to Black Rock Speedway on Saturday for the first ever Canandaigua points show at that speedway. Rain checks can be used in two weeks, June 5, when the Sportsman and Pro-Stocks complete their rain delayed show from May 1, making for double features in those two divisions. Or rain checks can be used, along with an additional $5, for the premium show this Saturday, May 29. That program is the Taney Memorial, honoring the late Denis Taney and race official Fred Taney. The program features DIRT Modifieds, Pro-Stocks, Street Stocks and Patriot Sprint Cars. The DIRT Modifieds will be running a 50-lapper, their second of the season. Race time starts at 7 p.m. sharp.
