GARY TOMKINS CRUISES TO HIS THIRD CANANDAIGUA WIN OF THE YEAR

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Gary Tomkins, from nearby Phelps, NY, won his third DIRT Modified feature of the year to remain as on of just three different drivers to win this year on the famed half mile oval. Scott Boudinot, who finished in tenth overall, was the first 358-Modified across the finish line and received a guaranteed starting spot in the Sunoco Race Fuels 150 at Syracuse in October.

With the Sportsman off at Black Rock Speedway, the full fender divisions received special attention. The Pro-Stock ran a 25-lap double point feature with outsider Beamer Guzzardi taking the win. Beamer came to Canandaigua as his normal weekly track was the site of the Genesee County Fair and he had the night off. In the Street Stocks, also a double point affair, Mike Murphy won the 20-lap main.

Mike Payne took the lead at the drop of the green in the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature. But as the leaders rounded the fourth turn the yellow flew for a three car accident in the first turn. Involved were Ron Cartwright Sr., Dale Kissel and Allen Willoughby. The race restarted and the yellow flew again when Danny Johnson broke a rear end on the back stretch and came to a stop.

Darryl Ruggles had passed Payne and was now the leader of the race. Ruggles started to distance himself from Derrick Podsiadlo, running in second. Gary Tomkins moved around Podsiadlo on lap five to take second. Tomkins then gobbled up any distance between himself and Ruggles. On lap eight he sailed by Ruggles for the lead.

The yellow came out on lap 12 when John Pfeffer spun exiting the fourth turn and sat facing traffic on the front stretch. The yellow cut away the lead Tomkins was able to build for himself in just a few laps.

Tomkins proceeded to rebuild his lead with Charlie Donk now in second. Steve paine came up to challenge Donk and took the position from him on lap 17. Tomkins now held a 3.7 second lead on Paine. By lap 30 that lead had stretched to 7.4 seconds when the yellow came out for Ed Monroe who coasted to a stop at the pit entrance.

A five lap dash was set up to the checkers with Tomkins taking the victory. Paine, Chad Brachmann, Donk and Chuck Bower rounded out the top five finishers.

The Pro-Stock 25-lapper had the fans on the edge of their seats with three and four wide action. Thirteen cars started the main with Chad Homan immediately grabbing the lead at the start of the race. Daryl Hilkert closed in on Homan and finally made his move to take command of the race when Homan drifted too high in the fourth turn on lap nine. Third place, James Henry also drifted high in the fourth turn. But in his case he was coming to a stop with mechanical woes. This brought out the only yellow of the race.

Homan was now dropping back when the green again flew. On the move was Beamer Guzzardi from Lima, NY. Guzzardi took second from Homan on lap 16 and took off after Hilkert. On lap 18 he ducked low and was able to take the lead. Jipp Ortiz in meanwhile passed Homan for third.

Hilkert made a number of jabs at trying to regain the lead but each time his efforts fell short. On the final lap Ortiz ducked low to take second.

At the finish line it was Guzzardi with the upset win. Ortiz, Hilkert, Frank Guererri Jr. and Homan rounded out the top five finishers.

The 20-lap Street Stock main was riddled with yellow fever. It seemed the race was never going to get going as four yellows flew during the first seven laps.  On lap one Brad Steinruck lost a wheel in the first turn. Lap three saw Leroy Lewis tagged the second turn outside wall and Lee Zimmerman spin into the infield. On lap four Zimmerman again spun, this time in the fourth turn. A three car wreck then ensued including Frank Burnell, Steve Faulkner and Mike Withey. The lap seven yellow came when Nat Peckham looped on the inside of the second turn. Through all of this Faulkner led the first three laps. Scott Deline was then able to pass Faulkner and lead laps four to six. Mike Murphy then took his turn at the lead.

A four car battle at the front including Murphy, Nick Rizzo, Mike Welch and Adam Depuy then took the fans' attention. Blane Smith joined the fray to make it a five car battle for the lead. Smith was up to the challenge and took over as the leader on lap 11. He held on until lap 16. Murphy made an outside move on lap 17 to pass and regain the top spot. Murphy cruised home the winner followed by Smith, Mike Welch, Rizzo and Roco Conte to round out the top five.

This Saturday will find the 161st Ontario County Fair in full bloom. All divisions will be in action; Modified, Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and Street Stocks. Race time starts at 7 p.m. sharp. Come early and enjoy the County Fair.
