COFFEY TAKES FIFTH MOD WIN OF THE YEAR AT CANANDAIGUA, CANANDAIGUA, NY...Vic Coffey, from Leicester, NY, picked up his fifth Canandaigua DIRT Modified feature of the year in a big way, winning by more then a five second margin over last week's winner Steve Paine. In sportsman action Loren Lincoln earn his first ever Canandaigua feature win. Chad Homan, who has 15 career wins at Canandaigua, picked up his first of the season. And in Street Stock action Mike Minutolo became the first back-to-back feature winner of the year. The 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw Karl Comfort take the lead from his inside second row starting position at the drop of the green. A tangle in the third turn saw Charlie Donk fly off the speedway and bring out the yellow. the restart had to be aborted following Ron Cartwright Jr. losing a wheel in the fourth turn. When the race resumed it was Coffey with the lead over Comfort, Darryl Ruggles, Jeff Brownell Jr. and Steve Paine. Coffey then began to stretch out his lead by some four seconds, entering lapped traffic by lap 13. Coffey was now securely in the lead with Paine passing Comfort for second on lap 16. By the time Paine made his move to second, Coffey was holding a 4.5 second lead. The top five all handled lapped traffic, as only the top six finished on the lead lap come checkers. Coffey took the win followed by Paine. Gary Tomkins earned a solid third some 3.9 seconds back of Paine. Comfort and Bower rounded out the top five. Bower's run came from the back of the field as he missed his heat race and was relegated to the rear of the feature line up. The race was run at an average speed of 88.968 mph. The 20-lap Sportsman main saw Todd Henderson, who has suffered three weeks of bad finishes, on the pole. As expected Henderson blasted into the lead at the drop of the green. Rob Bussey and Loren Lincoln were in pursuit, with Lincoln taking second on lap two. On lap nine the yellow flew when Steve Cheesman looped in the first turn and was collected by Phil LaVare. During this yellow rain began to fall. A number of competitors pitted during this rain delay. Henderson remained the leader over Lincoln on the restart, with Scott Schrader running a distant third. The yellow flew again on lap 17 when rookie Justin Henderson, Todd's son, slow dramatically on the front chute, coasting to a stop on the back stretch. On lap 21 Henderson drifted high in the fourth turn, thus allowing Lincoln a point of attack to take the lead. Lincoln powered low and grabbed the front spot by mere inches at the start-finish line. Before another circuit could be completed the yellow was out for the third time in the race. Dan Wiesner and Rick Miller had come together and sat on the inside of the speedway in the grass. But the yellow went out for Steve Doell who spun out in the second turn. When the race resumed Steve Cheesman came to a stop on the front chute causing the fourth yellow for the race. It also set up a green-white-checker finish. Lincoln took the win by nearly a half second over Scott Schrader, Henderson, Scott George and Eldon Payne Jr.. The race averaged 73.136 mph. "I was studying where Todd (Henderson) had a weak spot around the track," stated Lincoln following a dance on top of the roof of his car in victory lane. "I found it in the way he exited the second turn. When he went high in turn four, that was all the opening I needed to make the pass." The Pro-Stock 20-lap main saw five lead changes take place. James Henry battled Bill Hallett for the lead for the first three laps. The yellow flag for debris in the second turn brought that battle to a halt. On the restart the Henry machine let out a long plume of blue smoke starting in the third turn and slowed on the speedway. Henry lost his fifth engine of the year. The race resumed with a tight battle back in the pack. Brian Thompson had an interesting encounter when he had to slow abruptly. Jipp Ortiz found the nose of his Josh Comp Chevy tucked under the rear of the Thompson machine, lifting it's rear wheels off the ground. Thompson went pit side with a flat front tire and major left front fender sheet metal repairs. Ortiz showed no damage and continued on the track. Hallett now led Chad Homan, Kevin Smith and Roger Chrysler at the halfway mark, lap 10. The very next lap saw Homan sensed Hallett slowing some in the fourth turn and Homan ducked low to race side-by-side with Hallett down the front chute. Homan then found himself in the lead exiting the second turn. Hallett made an outside run at Homan on lap 17 to again do the side-by-side race down the front stretch. Homan was able to maintain his lead at the checkers for the victory. Hallett finished second followed by Kevin Smith, Ortiz and Chrysler. Roco Conte had the 15-lap Street Stock feature in the bag. Following two early lap cautions he had been able to pull out a five car advantage over first Mike Murphy and later Mike Minutolo. One of the early cautions saw Kevin Collins slam into the fourth turn concrete, lose a wheel. Daryl Barrett then ran over the wheel and launched his number 1 into the air on the front chute. Both Barrett and Collins were done for the night. As for Conte the long green run caused him to enter lapped traffic. That lap traffic slowed Conte enough for Minutolo to run him down and then go outside the lapped cars, while Conte was trapped low by the lapped cars, entering the white flag lap. The lap cars then moved low and Conte was caught up in an accident in the first turn and Minutolo sailed home with the win. "I saw the lap cars and was hoping Roco would go low," stated Minutolo, who also won last week's Ontario County Fair Street Stock Championship feature. Mike Welch, Adam Depuy, Murphy and Nat Peckham rounded out the top five finishers. LEGEND NOTE BOOK: Mike Murphy's run at Spencer Speedway on Friday seems to have stirred up interest in the Canandaigua Street Stock ranks about trying the asphalt...Don Slover loaned his car to Scott Boudinot for the feature following Boudinot losing an engine in his car on the last lap of his heat race. Fran Hilton allowed Mike Ward the same opportunity as Ward suffered motor problems also. David Allen also did the same for Paul Guererri in the sportsman division. Guererri recorded only a few laps in his heat and pulled pitside in his number 7. This Saturday, August 14, will be Lakeview Mental Health center night with the ladies races added to the regular program. But before that on Thursday, August 12, Honoeye Auto Parts and Turner Automotive present the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series featuring the "big block" stars of the DIRT circuit in action. They will be joined by the popular Pro-Stock division. Both Thursday and Saturday's events start at 7 p.m.. On Thursday time trials for the Modifieds start at 6:45 p.m..
